Job Summary
Reporting to the Client Services Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing front line customer service and supervision of event guests of the Markham Museum during a large site wide event. The role will be accountable for ensuring that event guests have an enjoyable and positive experience at the facility while participating in Museum delivered activations and exhibition experiences.
The Community Rental & Events Assistant will support event activations, including but not limited to, hands-on exhibition activities and supervision, snowshoe rentals, providing wayfinding assistance, event administration, coordination and delivery as needed during events.
Due to the nature of events, the hours for this position can fluctuate, with the majority of the shifts taking place in the evenings and weekends (ending at times as late as 1:30am). This position is contingent upon funding received through the Canadian Summer Jobs program. An extension may be considered should additional grant funding become available.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Oversee smooth execution of events activations and ensuring a positive visitor experience throughout the entire duration of events.
- Leads activities with the public based on the theme of the event and/or exhibition they are supporting.
- Address any issues from visitors in a prompt, effective and professional manner and escalate to Supervisor where needed.
- Responsible for event implementation and logistics including set-up and take down of required tables, chairs, and other activation materials, etc.
- Work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Maintain site security and responsible for the opening and closing of the Museum grounds and its various buildings, ensuring that all buildings are locked, alarms have been set and assets have been secured at closing.
- Takes a lead role in safety and security procedures and situations. Effectively deals with emergencies if and when they arise.
- Ensure a safe and accessible environment for event guests.
- Ensure client agreements are being adhered to as per the direction of the Business Development & Event Coordinator or designate.
- Complete an end of day status report for events/rentals.
- Helps ensure a clean, safe and professional atmosphere through general cleaning/maintenance of exhibition and indoor event spaces as required (i.e. sweeping, cleaning clearing and salting walkways, set-ups and take down of activation materials as required).
- Maintain constant communication with other on-site staff regarding event details and guest location, to ensure coordination of site use by multiple clients.
- Maintains awareness and ensures client compliance with City of Markham Rules and Regulations.
- Responds and directs requests from visitors and other City of Markham staff on general issues and/or maintenance requests.
- Key duties related to this position will be focused on site needs for the large-scale events, including the pre and post set-up and take-down, along with leading site activations.
- Operates point of sale system and answers visitor inquiries over the phone.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of 16 years of age or older at the start of employment
- Excellent customer service and communication skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons in a courteous and efficient manner
- Previous customer service experience
- Up to date Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’
- Must be able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to deal tactfully with customers
- Able to follow detailed instructions
- Strong email and phone etiquette and effective listening skills
- Strong team approach and open/adaptable to change

- Previous experience working with children and families an asset

- Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License is an asset
