We're looking for an experienced Gas Distribution Operator 3 to help operate, maintain, repair, and construct gas distribution infrastructure that supports safe, reliable service for our community. In this senior field-based role, you'll bring strong technical capability, sound judgment in emergency situations, and a commitment to safe, efficient operations. The position includes participation in a rotating after‑hours on‑call schedule to support emergency response and system reliability. This is the kind of work that has visible impact every day in the community.

A closer look at the role

In this role, you will perform and often lead gas distribution work involving the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of gas system assets and customer services. Responsibilities include responding to routine and emergency calls as part of a rotating after‑hours on‑call schedule, completing installations and repairs on mains, services, regulators, meters, and related equipment, conducting underground locates, supporting construction and ground disturbance activities and maintaining accurate records.

 

Requirements

What you bring

  • Strong knowledge of safe work practices, occupational hazards, industry standards, City COPs, and Gas Distribution SOPs.
  • Experience with poly pipe fusion and emergency stopping procedures.
  • Ability to organize and perform assigned work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other software, with the ability to learn city-specific systems and support coworkers with basic processes.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, including during emergency situations, while using sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with colleagues, other departments, and the public.
  • Physically fit and able to work in demanding field and environmental conditions.


Qualifications

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency diploma.
  • Eight (8) years' experience in utility distribution industry or equivalent acceptable to Management.
  • Successful completion of refreshers and upgrading courses required to maintain this position.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Alberta Operator's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possess and maintain valid First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, TDG and Ground Disturbance 201 certificates.
  • Possess and maintain a city approved Polyfusion certificate.
  • Journeyperson certification as a Gas Utility Operator with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training would be considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of management approved training and experience may be considered.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
