The City of Medicine Hat is seeking an Engineering Manager (Electrical) to lead the engineering function responsible for the performance, reliability, and long-term evolution of electric generation assets, including gas turbine systems. What you'll be doing
As Engineering Manager, you will balance hands-on technical leadership with strategic asset planning, including:
Power generation & electrical systems leadership
- Lead engineering support for electric generation assets, with a strong focus on gas turbine Generation units
- Ensure system reliability, availability, and performance through effective asset management and lifecycle planning
- Provide expert technical guidance on electrical systems, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
Capital projects & asset management strategy
- Lead and support major capital projects, including equipment upgrades, modernization initiatives, and performance improvements
- Develop long-term engineering and investment strategies aligned with operational and regulatory requirements
- Guide technology adoption to ensure future-ready generation operations
Safety, compliance & change management
- Lead the Plant Management of Change (MOC) process to ensure modifications are safe, intentional, and well-governed
- Ensure compliance with NERC / CIP and applicable regulatory standards
- Promote a strong safety culture across engineering and operations
People & cross-functional leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and technical professionals
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Partner closely with Operations, Maintenance, and senior leadership to align engineering priorities with business needs
What you bring
You are a technically credible engineering leader who enjoys developing people and improving systems. You bring:
- Significant experience in power generation, including gas turbines, with leadership experience guiding technical teams.
- The ability to interpret complex plant systems and translate that into effective asset strategies, troubleshooting approaches, and long‑term planning.
- A leadership style that inspires accountability, continuous learning, and collaborative problem‑solving.
- Strong communication skills and confidence working across operations, engineering, and senior leadership.
- Knowledge of NERC/CIP regulations.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited education institution.
- Seven (7) years of directly related experience in the Power Generation field and Gas Turbine experience including five (5) years in a supervisory management capacity.
- Registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), in good standing.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation would be considered an asset.
- Possession of a Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- An equivalent combination of management approved education, training and experience may be considered.
