The Plumbing & Gas Safety Codes Officer is responsible for the review of plans, permitting and inspections of plumbing and gas installations for buildings/developments to ensure compliance with the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and applicable Plumbing and Gas codes. The position is required to provide technical advice on applicable codes, conduct site inspections, evaluate plans, issue permits, variances and alternative solutions and to carry out enforcement of all types of systems associated with various occupancies.

How You'll Own It

  • Review plans and information submitted in support of permit applications for plumbing and gas installations to determine compliance with the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and applicable Plumbing and Gas codes.
  • Conduct site inspections of plumbing and gas installations at various construction stages to verify compliance, identify deficiencies or unsafe conditions, and follow up through re-inspections and enforcement activities where required.
  • Investigate unsafe conditions, complaints, and non-permitted work, including the issuance of Orders and other enforcement actions where necessary.
  • Evaluate alternative solutions and variance requests to determine whether proposed alternatives achieve an equivalent level of safety in accordance with applicable codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and information to internal and external customers regarding code compliance, permitting requirements, and acceptable solutions.
  • Participate in joint inspections and occupancy-related inspections to support issue resolution and compliance verification.
  • Maintain accurate records related to plans, permits, inspections, compliance monitoring, reports, variances, and enforcement activities.
  • Prepare written reports related to inspections, investigations, plan reviews, and other regulatory activities.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment safely while carrying out assigned duties.
Requirements

What you bring

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and applicable Plumbing and Gas codes.
  • Strong ability to interpret, analyze, and evaluate code compliance and technical requirements.
  • Strong investigative, research, problem-solving, and enforcement skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with contractors, developers, internal staff, and members of the public.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in a regulatory environment.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate technical documentation, reports, and inspection records.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer software in a networked environment.
  • Ability to work independently while managing priorities and responding to changing operational needs.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and safe work practices.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or High School Equivalency.
  • Journeyperson certification as a Plumber and Gasfitter.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related work experience.
  • Plumbing (Group A) and Gas (Group A) Safety Codes Officer certification, with the ability and willingness to obtain Plumbing Group B certification if required.
  • Must maintain Safety Codes Officer status through ongoing upgrading as required by the Safety Codes Council.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • An equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
