About the Role

Vacancy Status: This posting is for an existing vacancy.

Reporting to the Public Works Supervisors, the Equipment Operator III is responsible for the general operation and maintenance of heavy equipment in roads, parks and cemeteries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operating all heavy equipment in the Department in accordance with approved levels of service.
  • Performing routine maintenance on roads, parks, cemeteries and construction equipment.
  • Operating snow plow and sand equipment; responding to a high level of after hour call-ins for these activities.
  • Recommending appropriate equipment utilization and setting up equipment and work sites in accordance with construction safety standards and Municipal Policy and Management Directives.
  • Providing direction and guidance to staff on work sites.
  • Adhering to prescribed safety practices while operating equipment to ensure the safety of the traveling public and co-workers.
  • Performing duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Minimum Maintenance Standards, Municipal policies, and procedures. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those specific to the department.

What you bring

  • A Secondary School diploma and have completed training courses on the application and operation of heavy equipment or possess an equivalent combination of education and proven ability and experience in the operation of the equipment.
  • A minimum of one (1) year demonstrated experience in the proficient operation and maintenance of all heavy equipment, including combination plow unit, is required.
  • All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, construction safety practices and procedures and municipal policies and procedures.
  • Successful completion of OGRA – TJ Mahony – Construction and Maintenance Courses
  • Valid Class “D” Ontario Drivers License with “Z” endorsement is mandatory.
  • Current First Aid Certificate and WHMIS is mandatory.
  • A commitment to exceptional customer service and professionalism.
  • Access to reliable transportation. 
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Wage: $32.70 to $40.49 - Code 5 of the 2026 Outside Collective Agreement.

  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week

Additional Information

Public Works Employees are subject to standby, on call duty and may be required to work out of any Public Works location depending on work schedules and staff requirements. Employees hired externally or from another Department will be scheduled into shifts Monday through Sunday. The successful candidate will be expected to respond to after-hours calls especially during the winter season program.

A satisfactory criminal record check and proof of qualifications will be required for the successful candidate, including:

  • Proof of a current Driver’s Abstract, and a valid Ontario Class “DZ” Driver’s License.
  • Proof of a valid First Aid and WHMIS Training Certificate.

Pre-employment testing may consist of written and oral assessments. To be considered successful, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60% on each test. The highest score attained across the assessments will be used in the final award decision.
