About the Role

Vacancy Status: This posting is for a newly created position.

Reporting to the Animal Shelter Supervisor, the successful candidate will assist the Animal Services Division from May 19, 2026 to August 28, 2026. The duties and responsibilities of the Student, Animal Services are performed under the direct supervision of the Animal Services Supervisor.

This position entails responsibility for all facets of animal care work, including care of impounded and quarantined animals, preparation of statistical information and promoting of the adoption program. The successful applicant must have the ability to work in a team environment with Staff and Volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily cleaning and disinfecting animal housing areas and facility.
  • Conducting general physical/behavioral exams of all animals.
  • Feeding, general care and medicating of animals under the general direction of a Veterinarian.
  • Interacting with the public and staff in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Repetitive lifting of heavy items up to 18kg, repetitive motions and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Providing general information to Public for all aspects of Animal Services
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those specific to the department.
Requirements

What you bring

  • Candidates are being hired through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program. In accordance with the CSJ Program, interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
    1. Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the beginning of employment.
    2. Must be legally entitle to work in Canada.
  • Candidates must be enrolled or have recently graduated from an Animal Care or a similar program at college or university.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and follow all applicable policies as determined by the Municipality.
  • Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous manner and maintain good public relations.
  • Understanding of current Provincial and Municipal Legislation pertaining to the care, responsibilities and treatment of animals.
  • Knowledge and ability to handle/assess all size breeds of cats, dogs, small mammals including wildlife and reptiles.
  • Ability to lift an average of 18kg.
  • Must provide own safety footwear as approved by the Municipality.
  • A good understanding of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, as it pertains to working in this type of environment.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and the ability to work weekends is a necessity.
  • Candidates must be available from May 19, 2026, to August 28, 2026.

What we offer

  • Rate of pay: $20.75 (2026 rate)
  • Hours of work: 35 hours per week

Additional Information

A satisfactory criminal record check and proof of qualifications will be required for the successful candidate.

Pre-employment testing may consist of written and oral assessments. To be considered successful, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60% on each test. The highest score attained across the assessments will be used in the final award decision.
