About the Role

Vacancy Status: This posting is for a newly created summer student position.

Reporting to the Manager, Park Design & Development, the Parks Planning & Development Student will support the Planning & Infrastructure leadership team by providing technical assistance and administrative capacity in the areas of urban design, landscape planning, and capital project delivery. The position is responsible for assisting staff with the landscape review of development applications, supporting the implementation of green infrastructure initiatives, and providing assistance in the coordination of complex capital projects, specifically the development of new parks and public spaces. This role is key to providing support for the implementation of the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Master Plan and ensuring service delivery meets departmental expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the collection, organization, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data used for the development and update of major strategic parks and recreation planning documents, such as the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Master Plan.
  • Supporting staff in the technical review of policy governing the development of the parks and open space program, including policy implementation through Block Planning, Subdivision and Site Plan Review.
  • Assisting with the coordination of all internal comments, conditions, and clauses related to parks/open space and recreational facility provision as part of the processing of development applications.
  • Providing technical and administrative support for park development projects, including assistance with design standard documentation, cost estimating, tender preparation, and construction inspection notes.
  • Assisting in the management of the Parks Capital Forecasting, including tracking expenditures, compiling documentation, and reviewing invoices for capital project work progress.
  • Supporting staff in the preparation of reports, business cases, briefing notes, and presentation materials for Senior Leadership and Council.
  • Assisting in the organization and documentation of public engagement processes and public consultation meetings with various stakeholders.
  • Liaising with internal staff and external agencies to collect information required for development application review and capital project delivery.
  • Providing technical assistance where expertise in landscape architecture is required by other departments.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of LID (Low Impact Development) guidelines for the Municipality through research and preliminary design analysis.
  • Maintaining a positive and proactive customer service philosophy consistent with the Municipal practice of providing exceptional customer service.
  • Assisting in the documentation and filing of landscape architectural designs, standards, details, policies, and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you bring

  • Candidates are being hired through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program and must be available to work from April 20, 2026, to August 28, 2026.
  • In accordance with the CSJ Program, interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the beginning of employment.
    • Must be able to legally work in Canada.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program entering second, third, or fourth year.
  • Pursing a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, Environmental Design and Planning, or a related discipline.
  • Intermediate level proficiency using MS Office.
  • Intermediate level proficiency using AutoCAD.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "G" and access to a reliable vehicle.

What we offer

  • Hourly Rate: $22.50 per hour (2026 rate)
  • Hours of work: 35 hours per week
  • The Municipality of Clarington offers flexible work arrangements for eligible roles, where employees are empowered to do their best work in the way that works for them. Currently, this position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement option. Further details on this program will be discussed through the selection process.
