About the Role

Our Waste & Environment Department has an opening for a Sustainable Engineer in a term position capacity. As part of the Waste & Environment Department, reporting to the Environment Manager, the successful applicant will be joining a dedicated group of professionals with a passion for our environment, that are focused on data, tangible, effective results and maintaining a supportive team environment.

STATUS: Term (18 Months)

HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday and evenings and weekends as required 

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the Corporate Organics and Recycling Program, facilitating the Environmental Incentive Programs, and supporting the core business direction of the department, as well as other areas within sustainability. Work will include data gathering, research, solution development, performance reporting, project management support, and other technical and general duties. The responsibilities can be described as follows:

  • Creating, supporting and implementing policies and initiatives, and updating standards.
  • Project management including research, planning, scheduling, organizing, analyzing, report writing, communicating with stakeholders, making recommendations.
  • Facilitating and engaging stakeholders.
  • Planning and policy creation, monitoring the effectiveness of processes, programs and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with consultants, contractors, and internal departments.
  • Coordinate, support, and/or design and implement programs and activities within Environment.
  • Develop expert knowledge of climate adaptation, conservation practices and options to recognize opportunities and influence sustainability in Lethbridge.
  • Provide technical expertise to the department and to other City of Lethbridge departments.
  • Provide cost/investment estimates and rational for operation and initiatives.
  • Identifying and measuring key performance indicators and monitoring efforts to meet targets.
  • Create and deliver on performance measures.
  • Engineering recommendations, solutions and methods to implementing climate adaptation processes.
  • Reviewing geotechnical reports.
  • Other duties as they arise.

 

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must be a Professional Engineer in good standing with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists (APEGA).
  • 1-3 years' experience in civil/environmental/sustainability fields.
  • A combination education with relevant professional experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge and experience with climate adaptation principles and systems or civil engineering systems.
  • Strong project management and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate, lead and establish relationships with people, groups and teams of significant diversity and interests.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Continuous improvement mindset while delivering on department goals and initiatives.
  • Ability to conduct research, collect data and create reports for consumption by the team, executive leadership, the public and City Council.
  • Proven ability to foster collaborative relationships and a positive team environment.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing priorities in a fast-paced operational work environment.
  • Effective verbal, written and presentation skills.
