About You / What We Are Looking For

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the Lead Hand Carpenter in the Facilities Division.

Reporting directly to the Facilities Management Coordinator, the Lead Hand Carpenter will be responsible for skilled carpentry work as well as supervisory duties including providing direction of a small group of subordinates performing certified trades carpentry work.  An incumbent ensures for the efficient operation of the carpentry shop, assigns and inspects work and coordinates activities with that performed by contractors.  Considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised in the technical trade aspects of the work.  Assignments are discussed with a superior who reviews work performance in terms of effective services rendered.  As this position works coordinates with internal and external stakeholders, high levels of customer service and communication skills are required.

Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade
  • Considerable knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in such work
  • Ability to independently perform a variety of certified trades carpentry work
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and supervise a small group of subordinates
  • Ability to carry out oral and written assignments, and work from blueprints, diagrams, and sketches
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining records, estimating time and material requirements
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the trade

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Possession of Red Seal Certification and a valid Driver’s License.
  • Completed grade 12 education, supplemented by a recognized apprenticeship in the trade, and relevant certified trades carpentry experience in an outdoor setting
  • Experience supervising others including other Trades Qualified positions
  • 3-5 years’ experience in managing small to medium sized projects in all kinds of weather
  • Police Information Check (with no adverse reports )

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $46.37 plus benefits.
