About You / What We Are Looking For

The City of Coquitlam is looking to hire Recreation Instructors for our early years (0 – 5 years), school aged (6 – 10 years), and youth (11 – 18 years) recreation programs. In these essential positions, you will be responsible for planning, implementing and leading a variety of social, cultural, sport, and general interest activities as assigned by a supervisor.  The successful candidates will be responsible for safe and proper use of equipment and facilities and taking independent action and initiative in leading and instructing assigned programs.  If you are eager to be part of a collaborative and fun recreation environment where you can make a meaningful difference in participants' lives, this may be the perfect job for you.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Team player with excellent communication and people skills.
  • Enthusiastic, personable, energetic and outgoing, and have a passion for engaging with members of the community.
  • Experience leading recreation programs in a municipal setting and/or the equivalent related instructing, coaching and volunteer experience.
  • Flexibly available to work mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Shifts are varied throughout the year and programs run out of different facilities in the City. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Other applicable certifications such as High Five, ECE certification and NCCP
  • Valid BC Drivers License or equivalent is preferred.
  • Shifts are varied throughout the year and programs run out of different facilities in the City. 
  • Valid current First Aid and CPR ‘C’ certifications from an accepted agency (see below).

We accept Emergency, Standard, or Occupational First Aid certifications with CPR C issued by the following agencies:

  • St Johns Ambulance
  • Canadian Red Cross
  • Lifesaving Society
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation
  • Canadian Ski Patrol
  • WorkSafeBC

What We Offer:

This position has an hourly rate starting at $22.38 plus an additional 4% in lieu. Prep-time is compensated in addition to teaching time. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
