As the federal government prepares Budget 2026, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is urging investments that will strengthen municipalities' ability to deliver results on the priorities that matter most to Canadians.
In its submission, Building Canada starts locally, FCM outlines recommendations to accelerate infrastructure investments, develop a national approach to address homelessness, and scale proven federal-municipal programs such as the Green Municipal Fund.
As Canada advances its economic and nation-building agenda, municipalities are ready to be full partners in delivering results.
"Budget 2026 is an opportunity to invest in proven local solutions that can be deployed quickly and at scale," said FCM President Tim Tierney. "Municipal governments are experienced partners in turning national priorities into local results, and investing in solutions that already work is both effective and fiscally responsible. Together, we can make meaningful progress for Canadians."
FCM's recommendations call on the federal government to:
- Canada through investments in local infrastructure at the pace and scale needed to support housing affordability, trade diversification, economic growth, defence and resilience.
- Renew the National Housing Strategy, with a focus on homelessness prevention, response and a Housing First approach.
- Invest in existing federal-municipal delivery platforms that are proven and scalable, including FCM's Green Municipal Fund and international development programming.
- Strengthen community safety, resilience and well-being.
- Diversify municipal revenues to support long-term fiscal sustainability.
FCM looks forward to working with the federal government and partners from across the country to advance shared priorities and build stronger communities that drive economic growth and support a more prosperous future for Canadians.
