If you are interested in hands-on waterworks operations, protecting drinking-water quality, and maintaining reliable municipal infrastructure, this is a practical field role where you will help deliver services residents rely on every day.

What you will do

As a Utility Operator I in the Waterworks section of Public Works, you will assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution infrastructure. Working with a field crew, you will help deliver safe, reliable potable-water service and support the Water Infrastructure Replacement Projects.


Your impact (key responsibilities)

Waterworks operations & water quality

  • Assist with the maintenance and installation of water distribution components
  • Support the Water Infrastructure Replacement Projects and related waterworks field activities
  • Assist with live tapping of watermains
  • Work on the potable-water system and follow best management practices to maintain water quality
     

Construction & field operations

  • Lay pipe to grade and assist with setting grade boards, laser levels, and other layout equipment
  • Assist with operating pipe bursting, welding, and fusing equipment
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and all types and sizes of compaction equipment
  • Load, unload, mix, wheel, and shovel materials
  • Maintain clean, safe work sites
     

Teamwork & service delivery

  • Contribute to a respectful, reliable crew environment and perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements

What we are looking for

  • Experience in water distribution systems, pipefitting, or related municipal utility work
  • A strong commitment to potable-water quality, safe work practices, and dependable service
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, and a practical, team-oriented approach to field work

Requirements

  • Grade 12 graduation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of pipefitting experience in water or wastewater systems.
  • EOCP Operator in Training (OIT) certification in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection is considered an asset.
  • Basic navigation skills using field-based GIS software.
  • Traffic Control Certificate.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification.
  • A valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement, as required.
  • Annual renewal of a Driver’s Abstract is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


As part of this competition process, testing will be conducted.

Salary & Benefits
