The Inspection Services Division is seeking either a Building/Plumbing Official I, II, or III to perform skilled office and field inspection work related primarily to plumbing systems in residential construction. This role is responsible for reviewing and processing plumbing permit applications, conducting plumbing inspections during construction, and ensuring compliance with the BC Plumbing Code, BC Building Code, and applicable municipal bylaws. The position also provides technical guidance to contractors, designers, and members of the public on plumbing code requirements and permitting processes.

Under the general direction of the Senior Building Official, the successful candidate will review permit applications and construction documents for compliance with plumbing and building codes, prepare permits for issuance, and conduct field inspections of residential construction to verify that plumbing installations and related building components comply with approved plans and applicable regulations. The position responds to inquiries and complaints, liaises with contractors, designers, property owners, and internal departments, and provides interpretation of relevant codes, bylaws, and municipal procedures.

Requirements

For Building/Plumbing Official I, requirements include BOABC Building Level I qualified and Plumbing Level I qualified; a diploma from a technical college or university in engineering or architecture; and three years of directly related experience with codes and standards in building design, preparation of construction documents and construction inspections, including plumbing systems.

For Building/Plumbing Official II, requirements include mandatory BOABC Building Level II and Plumbing Level I Certifications; a diploma from a technical college or university in engineering or architecture, and six years of directly related experience with codes and standards in building design, municipal bylaws and regulations, construction inspections including three years as a building and plumbing official.

For Building Official III, requirements include mandatory BOABC Level Ill Certification and Plumbing Level 1 Certification; a degree from a recognized university in engineering or architecture; and five years directly related experience with codes and standards, municipal bylaws and regulations, construction inspections including one year of supervisory experience.

All positions require a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. As a component of the recruitment process testing will be conducted. Although we thank all applicants for applying, only those under consideration will be contacted.

Salary & Benefits

These are a C.U.P.E. Local 2011 position with a wage of $44.46 per hour (2024 rate) for Building/Plumbing Official I, $49.41 per hour (2024 rate) for Building/Plumbing Official II, $52.26 per hour (2024 rate) for Building Official III, plus an excellent benefits package.
