RECREATION THERAPIST – ADULT DAY PROGRAM (Permanent, Part-Time)

POSITION SUMMARY:
This UNIFOR position, under the direct supervision of the Adult Day Program Supervisor, the Recreation Therapist is responsible to provide meaningful and innovative recreation programs that meet the diverse social, physical, spiritual, cognitive needs of the clients under the supervision of the Adult Day Program Supervisor. These activities will assist in maximizing and maintaining the client’s optimum level of functioning.
MAJOR TASKS:
- Responsible for developing and implementing a variety of social and therapeutic programs as follows:
- Communicates with client, family and co-workers to establish an individual plan of care;
- Observes clients' responses to programs, assessing abilities and progress, intervening in situations when necessary;
- Engages clients in activities which correspond to identified needs and interests.
- In cooperation with the clients, develops a monthly activity calendar;
- Ensures that program/activity supplies and resources are available;
- Liaises with family and/or caregivers as required;
- Modifies the environment to make it conducive to physical, emotional and social stimulation while maintaining client safety;
- Acts as a resource person to volunteers and instructs when necessary; and
- Escorts clients to and from program in Program van.
2. Responsible for establishing and maintaining program records such as:
- Monitoring program participation and attendance by completing daily attendance log;
- Ensuring that each client has a service plan and a personal file;
- Daily vehicle inspection and logs; and
- Maintaining program records to monitor participation and program effectiveness.
3. Promotes the Adult Day Program through a public relations role including:
- Actively promoting program to clients, families and the community at large; and
- Including media in special events.
4. Is an active member of the Adult Day Program team which includes
- Supporting the Adult Day Program Mission and Goals;
- Ensuring Policies and Procedures from the Adult Day Program, Valleyview and/or the City of St. Thomas are observed;
- Identifying gaps and communicates the need for new and expanded services;
- Attending in-services, workshops to further professional development;
- Actively participating in monthly team meetings; and
- Participating in the development and implementation of fundraising projects.
5. Performs other duties as required.
6. This position must take responsibility for personal health and safety insofar as he or she is able under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations. A worker must:
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Act, the regulations and City policies;
- Must use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn;
- Report to his or her supervisor the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another worker;
- Report to his or her supervisor any contravention of the Act, the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.
This position shall not:
- Remove or make ineffective any protective device required by regulations or by the City, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately.
- Use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other worker.
- Engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a University Degree in Recreation Therapy and/or College Diploma in Recreation & Leisure Services.
- One (1) to three (3) years’ experience working on therapeutic programs for the cognitively impaired and frail elderly populations.
- Must demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Must have current First Aid & CPR certificate.
- Computer knowledge would be an asset.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 'F' driver’s license for the Province of Ontario.
- Must be able to work weekend and evening hours.
Remuneration: $29.31 - $30.23 per hour (2026 rate)
