As a Development Technologist, you will be responsible for authorizing service connections to The City's water, wastewater and storm infrastructure. As a member of the Development Engineering Division within the Community Planning Business Unit, you will apply your strong technical knowledge and professional experience to interpret and explain existing City policies, standards and bylaws; provincial and federal legislation; and to support external and internal partners including developers, engineers and internal team members. Primary duties include:

  • Authorize service connection and construction approval for development applications on behalf of Community Planning.
  • Evaluate applications and provide appropriate comments within the specifications, guidelines, standards, bylaws, policies, provincial and federal regulations and professional judgement and expertise.
  • Work as a team member with other Development Technologists and Engineers to facilitate development that meets the City's standards and requirements.
  • Liaise with applicants to ensure the business unit's requirements are met.
  • Direct, advise, interpret, evaluate, inform and provide information for specific applications through pre-application meetings, telephone calls referral and general walk-in inquiries.
  • Assist in addressing concerns from senior administration, homeowners, surveyors, and external contractors and developers. Inform and provide expertise to internal City business units to assist in negotiating and resolving issues.
Requirements

Qualifications 

  • A completed 2 year diploma in Engineering Technology or a closely related field (such as Civil Engineering Technology).
  • At least 3 years' experience in municipal engineering technology focused on planning, design, construction or water/wastewater distribution systems; corrosion/sediment control; hydraulics; interpretation of construction drawings, bylaws, specifications; preparation of technical documents; and field inspection.
  • A Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation is also required.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) interface programs or related software and modeling systems are assets.
  • You have exceptional communication skills accompanied by strong customer focus.
  • Well developed problem-solving abilities and analytic skills.

Workstyle

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Location: 625 25 Avenue SE

Compensation: Pay Grade 11 $44.76 - 59.84 per hour 

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle. 

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
