PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The 2025 Regional Emergency Services (RES) Firefighter Cadet Program provides an opportunity for registered paramedics to expand their career in public safety and emergency services, by completing fire suppression training in Fort McMurray while employed with Regional Emergency Services.
Employees will receive theoretical and hands-on training, and with successful completion of the program, they will obtain their NFPA 1001 Level 1 and NFPA 1001 Level 2. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced paramedics and recent graduates who are registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics to build their career in Fire and Emergency Services.
Working and training in both indoor and outdoor environments, Firefighter Cadets must be prepared to work in all weather conditions, and in various challenging training environments. This is a physically demanding position that requires regular exercise, lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined spaces. You must be able to complete the firefighter physical fitness testing to complete the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Successful candidates will have the opportunity to complete NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 - credentials that are required for a career as a Firefighter Paramedic with our integrated service.
- Learning about fire and emergency services and completing various training that will support future career opportunities within the field of Emergency Services.
- Safely respond to emergency and non-emergency scenes within established RES guidelines.
- Take direction from operations officers in matters pertaining to fire and medical response.
- Performing routine duties related to shift operations such as but not limited to basic apparatus and equipment maintenance, records management, and station maintenance.
- Assist the department in public education, the promotion of fire safety, fire prevention, and public relations campaigns.
- Attend training courses as necessary to facilitate progression to First Class Firefighter Paramedic.
- Performing basic administrative functions and tasks to support departmental processes.
- Perform such tasks as necessary to support and maintain continuity of the Regional Emergency Services Department.
- Understand and support the Corporate Mission, Vision and Values Statements.
- Perform other duties as required.
SKILLS:
- A willingness to learn about fire and emergency services and motivation to complete all of the required training.
- Ability to wear personal protective safety equipment such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) during training exercises, climb ladders, utilize fine and gross motor skills, and function effectively in confined spaces, heights and in various extreme temperatures on the training grounds and later in the field.
- Ability to take direction within the chain of command.
- Contribute and participate collaboratively in a team environment, while supporting others to accomplish goals.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to listen, follow instructions, and ask questions.
- Ability to participate in departmental fitness programs on an ongoing basis.
- Maintain composure in stressful and challenging environments and demonstrate values that align with public safety and emergency services.
- Ability to maintain a positive image and professionalism while representing the Regional Emergency Services Department.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Currently registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), or
- Able to complete the registration process with the Alberta College of Paramedics by Fall 2025.
- Valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (CPR) Certification is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be medically and physically fit to perform all the duties of this position on an ongoing basis. A Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) is required. Physical fitness testing is also required.
- A medical assessment is required, in accordance with NFPA 1582: Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search is required.
- Valid Class Four (4) Alberta Driver's Licence, or
- Valid Class Three (3) Alberta Driver's Licence (with "Q" Endorsement) or equivalent out of province is an asset.
