Position Snapshot
The Student Engineering Technician is responsible for assisting in the administration of the Municipality of Clarington infrastructure inspection program performing inspections of municipal infrastructure, collecting asset information, assigning conditional assessment values, and identification of hazards and deficiencies.
What you’ll be doing
As a Student, Engineering Technician, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Inspecting all municipal sidewalks, identifying hazards, and documenting deficiencies.
- Collecting infrastructure data in the field.
- Conducting condition assessments of infrastructure.
- Assisting construction inspectors with payment measurements.
- Travel occasionally to various work locations in a timely and efficient manner.
What you bring
The successful candidate will have:
- Candidates are being hired through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program. In accordance with the CSJ Program, interested applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the beginning of employment.
- Candidates must be available from April 28 to August 29, 2025, inclusive. Time off for vacation is not permitted during this employment period.
- Enrolled in, or recent completion of, a post-secondary educational program related to a Civil Engineering program is preferred.
- Excellent customer service and good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to interact with the public courteously and efficiently.
- Strong communication skills, able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Required to have access to a reliable personal vehicle for use on a daily basis in performing the work.
- Candidates may be required to drive a municipal vehicle for certain duties and will be required to possess and maintain a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License with a clean drivers abstract.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C” certification would be an asset.
- Current Health and Safety/WHMIS training would be an asset.
- Candidates must provide their own safety “green patch” footwear.
- Must be physically able to perform all duties including heavy lifting, daily prolonged walking of greater distances on uneven surfaces.
- Candidates are expected to work in all weather conditions.
- Must be legally able to work in Canada.
What we offer

- Rate of pay: $21.63 per hour.
- Hours of work: 7:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday up to a maximum of 35 hours per week

Additional information and requirements
Pre-employment testing for this position may include written and oral testing, to assist in determining the successful applicant. A passing score will be considered to be 60% on each test with the highest score considered in the award.
Prior to starting the position, the successful candidate must provide, at their own expense, the following:
- A current Driver’s Abstract and proof of a valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers License.
- A current (with the last 180 days) satisfactory criminal reference check, directly from a Canadian Police Information Centre. Criminal Records Checks from third party agencies are not acceptable. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a criminal reference check within the last 365 days are exempt from providing another criminal reference check.
