Mandatory Qualifications:

Registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics as Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP). Preference is given to those with ACP credential. EMS professionals without Alberta registration are encouraged to apply, with the understanding the Alberta license would be required prior to position start date.

Successful completion of one of the following:

Red Deer Polytechnic – Firefighter Applicant Physical Aptitude Test [LINK]
or -
University of Alberta – Firefighter Fitness Test [LINK]

Candidates who have not passed the physical fitness requirements at the time of hire may be offered conditional employment. They will have up to one (1) year from their hire date to obtain certification. In preparation for your physical test, you will have the opportunity to work out on shift. With fitness facilities at all 5 stations, you can also practice testing simulations mirroring that of the actual physical aptitude test. Meal planning and other fitness programs will also be made available to you to increase strength and endurance.

A minimum of a Province of Alberta Class 4 Drivers’ License is required upon the start date. Candidates must obtain a Class 3 license and Q endorsement for air brakes within the first 12 months of employment (cost not reimbursed by the employer).

Firefighting training to the NFPA 1001 standard and experience in an EMS system is an asset.

Shortlisted candidates will undergo a comprehensive selection process that includes a written fire aptitude test, a medical knowledge aptitude test and a medical scenario test tailored to the candidate's designation (ALS or BLS). The process includes a descriptive behavioural job interview and a psychological evaluation assessment.

Before being offered employment, candidates must pass a comprehensive medical.
