Description
As a Development Technologist, you will be responsible for the interpretation of City policy, standards, bylaws and legislation to assist developers, engineers, and staff within the Planning and Development department as well as various other business units. You will perform engineering-oriented review of development applications and input into the development approvals process. Primary duties include: • Analyze construction drawing submissions to determine the engineering design scope and establish a relevant review process for the various subject matter experts and partners. • Collaborate and provide technical advice prior to application with developers, consulting engineers, to discuss submission and approval requirements of construction drawings. • Conduct technical analyses/evaluations of the engineering content supplied by the subject matter experts for clarity and relevance. • Direct consulting engineers regarding the requirements to proceed with public infrastructure construction resulting in the coordination of the utility and infrastructure inspections. • Work with the development industry and City specialists to resolve various conditions and concerns. • Balance the needs of The City with the development industry to ensure infrastructure is constructed in a safe, timely and effective manner. • Interpret and apply applicable City engineering design guidelines, policies and/or legislation to each application.

Requirements

A completed 2-year diploma in Engineering Technology or a closely related field (such as Civil Engineering Technology) with at least 5 years’ experience in municipal engineering technology. • A Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation is also required. • A comprehensive understanding of planning, design, construction of water/wastewater distribution systems, erosion/sediment control, development agreements, interpretation of construction drawings, bylaws, specifications, preparation of technical documents. • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, formulate engineering requirements based upon the submissions and relate those concerns to various partners. • Advanced communication skills, excellent teamwork, judgement, and problem-solving skills, and ability to make independent decisions. • High attention to detail with a strong team and customer service focus are essential.
