Description
The Municipal Enforcement Department is seeking an Animal Control Officer to join their team!

Title:                Animal Control Officer
Department:     Municipal Enforcement
Status:             Full-time permanent
Salary:             $57,113.46 per annum
Settlement Allowance: $20,907.43 per annum
Union Status:   Unionized
Closing date:  Open until closed.

Reporting to the Chief Enforcement Officer, you will provide effective Animal Control Services and duties while representing the City of Iqaluit in a fair, professional and unbiased manner.

The Animal Control Officer will ensure compliance with the Domesticated Animal Control Bylaw and any amendment thereto, through a proactive approach of engagement with pet owners, ensuring the requirement for animal licensing and other requirements of the Bylaw.

This position will be responsible for all aspects as outlined in Departmental Policies, Procedures and Municipal By-law associated to Animal Control regulations.

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • Valid Nunavut Class 5 Driver’s License;
  • Knowledge of by-laws and acts to be enforced;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Municipal, Territorial and select Federal legislation;
  • A strong working knowledge of Animals, and Animal behaviors;
  • Ability to conduct investigations, inspections and incident interviews;
  • Ability to respond quickly and make verbal and written reports in public or court;
  • Ability to navigate standard computer software applications;
  • Confidence in dealing with domestic animals;
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including concise report writing.


PREFFERED EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary Diploma or Certification in a related field;
  • Self-defense, and conflict resolution training;
  • Knowledge of how to safely operate firearms, tranquilizer guns and others;
  • OC spray training and baton certification;
  • Fluency in Inuktitut is a definite asset.


Equivalencies that include a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities to formal education may be considered.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate must provide a clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as a TB test.
