This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 18 months

The Recreation Programmer for Visual Arts develops and supports Strathcona County arts, culture, craft and pottery programs for public participation. The Recreation Programmer ensures high quality culture programming opportunities exist for Strathcona County residents which meet their needs, maximize resources, ensure safety and reflect the mission statement of Recreation, Parks, and Culture of generating opportunities that enable the pursuit of healthy lifestyle choices. This position is based at Smeltzer House and works within a network of Recreation Programmers and as part of the Culture Program Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivers high quality culture, art and craft opportunities for Strathcona County residents maximizing resources, adhering to safety protocols and reflecting the department’s mission statement and Strathcona County’s corporate values
  • Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate programs and services to ensure community needs are being met
  • Recruit, interview, schedule, develop, supervise and evaluate program contractors, staff and volunteers
  • Complete proactive and efficient supply ordering and inventory in accordance with County protocols
  • Network with industry professionals and research new opportunities to ensure programs are developed and continuously improved to reflect current trends
  • Promote and cross-market recreation programs and services through department marketing strategy and outside resources to ensure maximum participation and revenue generation
  • Develop and manage the program budgets to maximize revenues and recover costs
  • Prepare and administer statistical reports as required
  • Investigate and respond to program and service inquiries and concerns in a timely and courteous manner
  • Conduct online registrations using the Intelligenz booking system and print reports as required
  • Oversee Occupational Health and Safety program for Smeltzer House, Clay Hut (pottery studio) and Studio One (fused glass) to ensure the health and safety of staff, instructors, participants and volunteers
  • As a member of the Strathcona County programming team, collaborate to develop and deliver innovative and creative programs and opportunities for a variety of audiences, ages and arts and culture interests. Ensure all equipment is maintained, operational and in good repair for the delivery of programs and services
  • Collaborate with the Facility Services Department to ensure onsite facilities are well maintained as per the asset management program
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ceramics background with comprehensive skills and knowledge of ceramics processes, and a broad knowledge of visual arts in general
  • Demonstrated budgeting experience
  • Strong leadership, team building and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication, customer service and public relations skills
  • Ceramics background and a broad knowledge of visual arts in general
  • Post Secondary specialized training/certificate with five (5) years related experience (Recreation, Business, Arts or Culture, Physical Education, Education, or related discipline)
  • Specialized Education in Fine Arts would be considered an asset
  • Experience in recruiting, supervising and evaluating staff/instructors

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to lift 45 pounds of weight
  • Obtain a current and valid Standard First Aid certification prior to the completion of training 
Salary & Benefits

Pay Range: $34.79 - $43.47
