Description
The Supportive Outreach Services (SOS), Mental Health Counsellor (MHC) is responsible for responding directly to Strathcona County residents who are identified as having mental health challenges in an effort to reduce the need for future contact with 9-1-1 services. Utilizing a strength-based, recovery-oriented approach that recognizes the importance of meeting individuals where they are at you will be providing front-line counselling to children, youth, and adults. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide a full range of participant-centered, mental health focused services in various community settings. Utilize a strength based, wholistic approach to complete assessments, and create meaningful goals for participants. This job requires a high level of flexibility and the ability to be creative in your counselling skills. 
  • Create intervention strategies involving a variety of agency supports in response to highly complex and varying issues. Develop and invest in strong working relationships with community partners and be part of an integrated team at FCS by providing support as needed to walk in counselling and Navigation. 
  • Meeting participants, when safe to do so, in various environments conducive and appropriate for case management and intervention support. This may include office, home, virtual, community, or other agency settings. 
  • Providing guidance, consultation and education to other department staff and community partners as it relates to mental health and psychiatric disorders
  • Maintaining accurate information in the electronic record systems, such as NewOrg
  • Understanding and applying legislation including the Mental Health Act; Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act; Children First Act; Freedom of Information and Privacy Act; Health Information Act; Drug-Endangered Children Act, as well as policy and procedure (i.e. Violence, Trauma, Suicide Prevention Protocol)
  • to provide excellence in service delivery and enhance the continuum of care for individuals with complex mental health and/or social needs
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Masters degree in clinical counselling from a recognized post-secondary institution and registration in good standing with an Alberta Regulatory College is required. Masters Degree in Social Work with a clinical or counselling major is preferred. 
  • Completion of clinical practicum along with one to three years experience in mental health field with broad-based experience in mental health challenge, family violence, high conflict relationships, crisis intervention, and addiction issues. Working knowledge of restricted activities under the Health Professions Act is important. 
  • This position requires strong assessment and engage with high-risk individuals involved in multiple systems while also recognizing and identifying other unmet social needs of participants. 
  •  Knowledge and experience related to the presentation of psychiatric behaviors is an asset. Training in this area is required within the first year of service. 
  • A strong and current understanding of evidenced based interventions/practices for complex individuals and liaise, consult, and plan with mental health providers for community-based supports.
  • The ability to effectively consult, liaise and include families, community service providers, schools, and police as part of the comprehensive support system.
  • Works cooperatively and effectively with management, supervisors, colleagues, staff and community members to achieve common goals.
  • Setting appropriate personal and professional standards for self; fostering an optimal working environment; and projecting a positive image of counselling services and contributing to the achievement of department goals and initiatives. 
  • Communicates by effectively conveying information and expressing thoughts and facts in a clear and concise manner (both verbal and written).
  • Demonstrates personal commitment to continually seeking to provide the highest quality service, including creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check 
  • Must be eligible to attain and retain enhanced RCMP security clearance
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $89,653.20- $112,112.00 per year
