Position Summary

Reporting to the Utilities Supervisor, the Utility Operator is responsible to operate water and wastewater systems and is required to ensure general maintenance of Yellowhead County assets
 

 

Position Responsibilities


Operation and Maintenance of Water and Wastewater Facilities

  • Provide save and aesthetically pleasing drinking water.
  • Follow "Alberta Environment Code of Practice" to provide safe and potable drinking.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to alarms and extraordinary situations that may occur such as low/high pressure alarms, high flow alarms, reservoir levels alarrms, power failures, etc..
  • Analyze and interpret graphs and data from SCADA (System control and data acquisition) system.
  • Supervise contractors working at County water and wastewater facilities.
  • Possess a working knowledge of water and wastewater with an ability to solve problems.
  • Implement the legislation pertaining to the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities and be able to recognize areas that expose the County to liability.
  • Must comply with the requirements of Yellowhead County's safety policy and the Provincial Legislation pertaining to worker health and safety to effectively manage the health and safety of workers or contractors and to manage the County's liability to maintain a safe and healthy job site.
  • Monthly scheduled water meter reads, commercial and residential.
  • Distribute inter-departmental communications and public notices.
  • Prepare reports on the performance of facilities and contractors.
  • Prepare and compile technical reports pertaining to water and wastewater facilities.
  • Analyze essential plant data collected from computer SCADA systems in order to compile and submit monthly and annual reports.
  • Calculate chemical dosage and verify plant readings in order to maintain safe drinking water.



Maintenance and Repairs of County Facilities

  • Maintain efficient operation of municipal water and wastewater facilities.
  • Conduct maintenance of Yellowhead County water meters.
  • Possess a good working knowledge of construction and maintenance techniques to determine production and quantity requirements pf projects.
  • Apply trouble-shooting abilities to recognize problems and repair promptly with minimal supervision in accordance with Alberta Environmental approvals.
  • Interpret and verify construction and as-built drawings.



Customer Service

  • Investigate complaints from users of water and wastewater systems including responding to standby calls.
  • Conduct first call responses.
Requirements

Education/Skills

  • Completion of Grade 12 Diploma.
  • Level I or Level II Water and Wastewater Certification.
  • Registered member in AWWOA and AWWA.
  • Valid Class 5 Driving License.
  • Completion of Defensive Driving.
  • Two (2) years experience in water and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Two (2) years experience in working with legislation governing the operations of water and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Completions of Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
  • Completion of WHMIS.
  • Completion of First Aid and CPR.
  • Completion of Confined Space Entry.

 

Working Environment

  • Provide 24-hour standby on a rotational basis.
  • Demanding physical labour is required at times.
  • Daily travel is required regardless of road conditions.
  • Hazardous chemicals and handled on a daily basis.
  • Position involves working in confined spaces and in unsanitary conditions.
  • Overtime and standby often leads to working extended hours and/or working late nights and early mornings.
Salary & Benefits

The salary range is $71,688 to $88,893 per year.
Yellowhead County offers a competitive benefit package.
