This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 12 months.

As a Planner I, Long Range Planning, you will be responsible for providing assistance to senior staff on major projects related to statutory plans, land use regulations, policies and procedures while managing minor projects, preparing reports and processing applications associated with land use planning activities. This position provides planning expertise and advice to the general public, internal departments and the development industry to achieve development that is consistent with the goals and policies of Strathcona County. As a specialized municipality, Strathcona County offers an exciting opportunity to work in both rural and urban environments. 

This role may be eligible to participate in our hybrid work program. The successful candidate will be required to reside within 2 hours of Sherwood Park, Alberta. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide long range planning project support and research, as well as project management for minor projects related to land use planning
  • Interpret and provide advice at an entry level on planning and development policies and regulations of the Municipal Government Act, the Municipal Development Plan, other statutory plans, the Land Use Bylaw as well as other regulations, policies and procedures for a diverse range of internal/external customers 
  • Prepare, process and facilitate Municipal Development Plan, area concept plan, area structure plan, Land Use Bylaw amendment applications and subdivision applications 
  • Provide support for current planning applications and development permitting, as needed
  • Prepare reports and presentations on planning initiatives and projects for the Planning & Development Services department 
  • Respond to external and internal referrals for Edmonton Metropolitan Regional Board referrals, statutory plan and amendment applications, Land Use Bylaw amendment applications, subdivision and development permit applications 
  • Assist senior planners in the establishment of branch policies, processes and procedures 
  • Attend open houses and public meetings on behalf of the Land Development Planning branch and potentially act as a planning representative on various committees 
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post Secondary Degree in Planning or a related field with at least one year of planning experience, or experience in a related field 
  • Eligible to be a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners  
  • Technical knowledge of the practices and principles of community planning  
  • Knowledge of relevant federal, provincial and municipal legislation, policies and programs, as well as the ability to integrate/utilize them in planning and development projects 
  • Good public relations, interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written) to communicate with County staff, the development industry and general public 
  • Facilitation and mediation skills and the ability to influence outcomes through public presentations and written reports  
  • Ability to carry out duties with minimal supervision and to take initiative to complete projects for the Land Development Planning teams 
  • Ability to achieve practical results allowing strategic and timely adjustments to the Land Development Planning work program in a complex and growing environment 
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to write and interpret policy and regulation 
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team to promote corporate and Planning & Development Services' goals/objectives to clients/members of the public 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current applicable legislation, new trends and literature 
Salary & Benefits

Pay Range: $74,893.00 - $93,602.60
