Job Summary   

Work in a dynamic environment, and alongside a high-performing and results-driven team to drive the growth and competitiveness of Markham’s innovation economy. You will focus on supporting the growth of new and existing businesses through investment attraction and retention efforts, while leading the delivery of strategic economic sectors program. You will work collaboratively with local industry, business associations, community, academic and government partners, to develop and implement initiatives that position the City of Markham as a global destination for talent, investment and high-quality living. 

Roles and Responsibilities    

  • Project manage and support the implementation of key sector growth strategies and work plans to facilitate sector growth, with a specific focus on the Markham-Vaughan Mobility Demonstration Zone 
  • Lead the implementation of strategic international partnerships that support investment and trade opportunities for Markham businesses, as well as helping to attract investments into the community. 
  • Initiate, plan, and execute local and international business events and missions that facilitate economic opportunities for Markham businesses. 
  • Support business development and retention efforts to support job growth in Markham, including facilitating partnerships, supporting development projects, and providing ongoing service to help existing businesses thrive/ expand their operations in Markham. 
  • Respond to information inquiries from prospective industries, investors, site selectors, developers, and landowners. 
  • Develop and maintain diverse stakeholder partnerships including local businesses, industry and local ethnic business networks, community associations, real estate and land development organizations, academic and higher-level government partners, with the goal of building local ecosystem collaborations that support economic growth in Markham. 
  • Represent the City to partner, engage and participate in relevant industry / business initiatives, events, forums and tradeshows to build strong networks to promote Markham’s competitiveness and attract investment interests. 
  • Collaborate with Departments from across the City to support the overall Strategic Plan of the organization, while representing the economic needs and opportunities of the community. 
  • Participate and contribute to the success of the Development Commission initiatives and other duties as assigned. 
  • Lead in the development and implementation of marketing materials and programs; research, author, and present reports on economic development matters. 
Requirements

Requirements    

  • University degree in business, marketing, geography, economic development or related discipline 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a municipal government environment, of which at least three years are in economic development or comparable professional capacity; 
  • Economic Development Certificate (Ec.D) an asset;  
  • Experience in project or product management, certification an asset 
  • Experience in a private sector business development role; 
  • Knowledge of real estate, planning, economic strategy, business planning, importing, exporting and government programs/services 
  • Client-focused, results-driven and with strong ability to multi-task 
  • Experience in advanced automotive technologies and smart mobility sectors an asset 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Flexible work schedule for attendance at events in early morning, after hours or on weekends and for client/stakeholder liaison. 
  • Requires attendance at frequent external meetings and periodic travel, sometimes for periods of 7-14+ days consecutively. 
  • Possesses a G2 License/ access to motorized vehicle

Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $99,224.00 To 116,765.00 Annually
