Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Environment Operations and Programs, the Intermediate Environmental Technologist assists the Manager and departmental staff with all aspects of environmental projects including: coordination of field work, providing guidance to contractors and consultants and acting as a liaison with regulatory official officials. This position conducts environmental assessments (ESA phase 1 and 2) and remediation projects, performs site inspections, prepares work plans and assists the Manager with preparation of budgets and training delivery. The Intermediate Environmental Technologist also provides advice and support to other city departments and projects including historical land uses, brownfields, species at risk, soil and groundwater management, contaminated sites, and environmental policy.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct environmental monitoring and testing at closed landfill sites, within buildings, at other environmentally sensitive sites, and at project sites including work preparation, execution, troubleshooting, monitoring of contractors and follow-up
Maintenance of Species at Risk program and procedures
Regularly interpret analytical results and regulatory criteria
Liaise with provincial and federal regulators and officers
Inspection of closed landfills and coordination of maintenance activities
Inspection and implementation of fill management plans and excess soil classifications
Prepare data summaries and environmental technical reports
Conduct environmental search requests
Provide response to environmental incidents and spills
Assist with procurement including tenders, RFPs, and quotes
Conduct environmental due diligence reviews to support corporate real estate transactions
Create and edit drawings using AutoCad
Assist with the maintenance, training, and implementation of the corporate Environmental Risk Management System
Understand and accurately implement proper health and safety practice during all work
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Competencies
3 year Technologist Diploma in an Environmental, Earth Science, or Engineering program
3 years of directly relatable, environmental experience with designated substances, excess soils, soil/groundwater/surface water/sediment/air sampling procedures, site assessments, spill response, site remediation, and use of environmental instrumentation
Must be registered and in good standing with OACETT as a certified engineering technologist (C.E.T.)
Direct experience with conducting soil, groundwater and surface water sampling procedures, site assessment, site remediation and use of environmental instrumentation (testing will be conducted for those selected for an interview)
Experience with engineering contract administration and site inspections
Experience with waste management procedures and the HWIN system
Must have 40 hour OSHA – NIOSH HAZWOPER course
Experience with designated substance testing considered an asset
Must possess and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
Must possess a Safe Boat Training operator card
Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check, including vulnerable sector.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with other City departments and the public
Thorough understanding of Provincial regulations made under the EPA
Familiarity with the City’s Sewer Use By-law and the Provincial Permit to Take Water/EASR process
Capability of working independently with strong decision-making skills
This position will require frequent outdoor work in a variety of weather and terrain conditions and will occasionally require extended hours in response to environmental incidents and spills
Proficient user of MS Office and AutoCAD
Ability to perform the duties of the job while meeting the physical demands of this position
