This posting is for up to four positions including both Visual Arts Instructor I and Visual Arts Instructor II

These are seasonal positions starting mid-June with an expected end date of August 23, 2024.

We are seeking:

  • 1 Visual Arts Instructor at Gallery@501 (Instructor I)
  • 2 Visual Arts Instructors at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre (Instructor I)
  • 1 Visual Arts Instructor at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre (Instructor II)

The Visual Arts Instructor I and II’s work within a team environment to develop and implement creative, age-appropriate programs for Strathcona County in the areas of pottery, fused glass, painting, drawing, fibre arts, sewing, paper crafts, contemporary art interpretation, and games.
 

These positions report to the Visual Arts Programmers at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre and Gallery@501. The programs you will lead or support include:

  • Summer camps from Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Other programs that you may occasionally support include:

  • Community programs scheduled from Monday – Sunday from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm (child/ youth/ adult) 
  • Group programming occurring on weekend mornings and afternoons from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and weekday evenings from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm (Example: Embers (formerly known as 'Brownies'), Girl Guides, Birthday Parties, etc.)

Responsibilities

Instructor I

  • Provide children and youth with an inclusive, positive, safe, and creative learning experience 
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in visual art programs   
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and present art activities, games, outdoor play, and other activities
  • Provide support to the operation of summer programs such as registration administration, daily attendance records, communication with parents, and accurate recording and monitoring of specific registrants’ information
  • Daily set up and clean-up of activity site(s)  
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are followed
  • Provide daily feedback and communicate any incidents that occurred in the program, event, or camp to a supervisor

Instructor II (Lead Instructor) 

  • Plan, develop and deliver activities that incorporate a variety of artforms and mediums, including but not limited to, drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fibre art, glass fusing, art history and contemporary art theory
  • Consider skill development and progression, arts education approaches to maximise participant learning, appreciation, and engagement 
  • For children and youth, incorporate the interests of the children and supporting children’s emotional, artistic, and social development, creativity, and fundamental movement and fine motor skill progression.
  • Prepare materials for each program. 
  • Create and refine project samples for each program in advance for use as teaching tools during class instruction
  • Ensure program spaces are clean and safe and that materials and equipment are used in accordance with County OHS guidelines.
  • Provide excellent guest service for program participants and community
  • Collaborate and positively interact within a team environment 
  • Manage forms, documents and communications with class participants at the time of the class
  • Communicate any questions, issues or concerns to the Recreation Programmer
  • Assist with program documentation and administration and site preparation
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in visual art programs and ensure health and safety regulations are followed 
Requirements

Skills and Qualifications

  • Positive, proven leadership and team-building skills 
  • Ability to maintain high standards of respect, safety, quality, and cooperation 
  • Time-management skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision 
  • Outstanding problem solving and communication skills
  • Classroom management skills
  • Minimum Grade 10 completed and demonstrated experience working with children  
  • Completed one to two years of post-secondary education* in visual arts, education and/or other related degree or equivalent experience *for Visual Arts Instructor II position
  • Two years of work experience* instructing art programs to a variety of ages in group settings is highly desired *for Visual Arts Instructor II position
  • Experience and passion in visual arts, fine crafts, and/or recreation would be an asset 
  • Strathcona County’s Leaders in Training program is considered an asset 
  • Demonstrated experience or skills with some or all of the following art media: 
    • Art fundamentals; painting media, drawing media, art and design
    • Contemporary art knowledge and interpretation skills in a gallery or museum environment
    • Cultural Arts and heritage crafts
    • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, art, and history
    • Experience interpreting curriculum-connected arts programming
    • Ceramic arts; pottery techniques, hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface decoration
    • Glass fusing, slumped forms, familiarity with glass studio tools and operation 
    • Fibre arts, textiles and sewing
    • Multidisciplinary art skills are considered an asset

Conditions of Employment

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check 
  • Current First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification
  • Ability to lift 20lbs. and supply totes as part of the job duties and stand for extended periods of time
Salary & Benefits

Pay Range: $19.37 - $31.84/hour
