Description
The Traffic Technologist is responsible for the development, maintenance, and verification of Strathcona County's traffic data collection program. This includes conducting traffic noise studies, coordinating the driver feedback sign program, and preparing department responses to traffic data related inquiries. This position is also responsible for gathering and recording asset management data related to County owned traffic signal, fibre optic and streetlight infrastructure, as well as managing, maintaining, and responding to Before You Dig Partnership (BYDP) inquiries.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, coordinate, and supervise the Strathcona County data collection program (vehicle, vulnerable road user and multi-mode users) for both rural and urban roadways
  • Develop, coordinate, and supervise manual traffic surveys to determine traffic movements, vehicle delays, speed profiles, as well as origin and destination studies
  • Recommend for purchase and maintenance of all traffic data collection devices including all installation hardware/tools and related software
  • Verify that all collected traffic data is valid and review collected data to establish traffic flow characteristics, traffic capacity, roadway safety, and aid in traffic signal timing plan effectiveness
  • Liaise with individual homeowners and other departments regarding traffic-related noise concerns
  • Recommend for purchase and maintain noise data collection devices including all related software
  • Analyze and distribute study data to landowner and/or other interested stakeholders
  • Liaise with department staff and RCMP & Enforcement Services department to identify and select new locations for Driver Feedback Signs (DFS) and provide technical support to the sign crew for the installation of the DFS devices
  • Review traffic-related public complaints/inquiries and perform site inspections for proper installation of DFS devices
  • Collect and validate field as-built data, and review and provide responses to third-party locate requests of County owned traffic signal, fibre optic and streetlight infrastructure
  • Communicate with the Before You Dig partnership regarding notification issues, inquiries and updates
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or post-secondary education in the Civil Engineering field, with two years of related technical work experience 
  • Accredited as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)
  • Experience in traffic data collection and traffic studies would be considered as an asset
  • Currently possess or have ability to obtain Work Zone Safety certification with the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) or Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA)
  • Working knowledge of the Traffic Safety Act and the Transportation Associations of Canada's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical report writing and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to effectively manage concurrent priorities
  • Experience in dealing with the public, administration, and contractor's concerns and questions
  • Proficient with AutoCAD, ArcGIS mapping, Microsoft Office, and traffic counting related software

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits 
Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $74,893.00 - $93,602.60 per year
