The Curatorial Assistant at Gallery@501 provides support to the Curator, assists in the day-to-day operations of the Gallery, helps implement the Gallery’s vision and goals, assists with exhibitions and builds capacity through marketing, membership, volunteer and administrative services to promote community connectedness as identified in the Recreation, Parks & Culture (RPC) Strategy and Business Plan. 

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Curator on exhibitions planning and administrative tasks, including calls for submissions, contracts and meetings with artists. Assist with exhibition installations, events, receptions, rentals and artwork documentation.
  • Coordinate artwork displays in the Artrium, window showcase and Members Show with guidance from the Curator.
  • Increase community engagement with the Gallery through coordination of the gallery membership program and events that promote increased artist participation (e.g. Members shows, Member of the Month displays).
  • Provide opportunities for audience development and broader cultural connections in the community. Connect with local artists and community arts organizations to identify beneficial collaborations and promotional opportunities.
  • Help build operational capacity for the Gallery by developing, promoting and maintaining a Gallery@501 volunteer program. Contribute to the Gallery’s visioning, strategic planning and implementation with a focus on diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
  • Develop broad community connections and build participation in Gallery@501 exhibitions, events and programs through social media, updating Gallery webpages, supporting exhibitions and artist talks, organizing special events and collaborating with Gallery staff, local artists and internal departments.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Gallery by maintaining excellent public relations and answering client inquiries and registering clients for programs and memberships. 
  • Regular front desk shifts are required, along with a flexible schedule to meet job objectives requiring evening and weekend work. Scheduling is based on Gallery open hours, events and operational needs.
  • Some supply and food/beverage purchasing and pickup will be required with a corporate credit card.
  • General office activities and other duties as assigned. 

Skills and Abilities

  • A high level of creativity and flexibility while balancing a range of tasks with internal and external collaborators to meet various deadlines in a constantly changing environment
  • Strong leadership, team, communication and relationship-building skills including excellent customer service and public relations. Public speaking and facilitation skills are required.
  • Basic digital photography skills
  • Ability to work in varied work environments including office work, visitor engagement, and physical work (exhibit installs)
  • Knowledge of social media platforms (Instagram,), marketing software such as Canva and Hootsuite, and web-editing experience 
  • Knowledge of Intelli registration, RecOnline booking software, and Office 365 would be an asset
  • Experience with basic hand tools, drills, painting tools and artwork installation
  • Some repetitive motions are involved in tasks. Some exhibitions may include audio/visual components, various lighting levels, music, sound or other sensory components that staff work alongside. 
Requirements

Qualifications 

  • University degree in visual arts, art history, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in a gallery or related environment
  • Strong interest and/or practical experience in visual arts
  • Ability to work some evening and weekends to cover gallery operational hours and activities

Conditions of Employment

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
  • Ability to lift 50lbs. as part of the job duties and sit and stand for extended periods of time, working in various indoor spaces. 
  • Work on ladders is required.
  • The position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate Gallery operations, events and activities that can occur in evenings and on weekends.
