The City of Grande Prairie is looking for eighteen (18) enthusiastic individuals to be our 2023 Summer Camp Leaders. We are looking for individuals enrolled in post-secondary in Education, Early Childhood Education, Recreation Studies, or a related field. The successful candidate will understand the commitment it takes to be a positive role model to children and their families while working in diverse team situations.
Current CUPE Job Classification:
Facilitates the delivery of a program; supervises and instructs participants; receives guidance or works in a team situation.
Primary Focus: Our Summer Camp Leaders will demonstrate leadership and a positive approach to play and play-based learning on a daily basis. Successful candidates will be supervising and caring for children in a fast-paced summer play environment. They must be flexible and available to work on upcoming events specified by the Supervisor or Coordinator.
Responsibilities
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning, promoting, delivering, and evaluating the weekday camp program for up to 30 children, ages 3-12 years of age. These program plans will incorporate all fundamentals of play and must be developmentally and age-appropriate. You will be responsible for the supervision and safety of the program's participants, including off-site adventures, swimming, and indoor and outdoor activities. In addition, you will be responsible for the cleanliness of your program site, inventory, set up, and takedown of the program. You will have the opportunity to participate in training and assist with special events as scheduled by your Supervisor and Coordinator.
Responsibilities specific to Summer Camp Program Planning may include the following:
- Plan and collaborate on new activities, play centers, and room environments.
- Create and present to Program Coordinator a scheduled weekly plan.
- Take an assisting role in special event collaboration, input, schedule, and rotations.
- Plan age-appropriate activities and experiences for children including physical activity games, art, and various other children's activities.
- Plan facilitate and lead team building initiatives and activities as requested by the Program Coordinator.
- Plan and present off-site adventures as requested by the Program Coordinator.
You Bring
The successful candidate must be 18 years of age and possess the following:
- Enrolled or completed post secondary education in Education, Early Childhood Education, Recreation Studies, or a related field.
- Standard First Aid, CPR level C and AED training required prior to hire date.
- Intervention Check and Police Record Check (completed within 1 month of employment).
- At least one year of previous experience leading children's recreation and sport programming, or relevant training.
- A clear understanding of 'child-centered programming' and an ability to supervise and manage the safety of 30 children with the assistance of a team member.
- Confidence to make on-the-spot decisions, adapting quickly to group dynamics.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with supervisors, co-workers, children and parents.
- Ability to present yourself in a positive and professional manner.
- Must be fun and energetic with an aptitude for working with children.
- Comfortable leading a variety of activities such as drama, arts, movement, sports and swimming.
- Experience in leadership, team building, mentoring youth and program planning is considered an asset.
Hours
40 hours per week (8 hours per day), Monday - Friday, as early as 8:00 A.M. and as late as 5:00 P.M. May be required to work at City events outside of regular hours.
Salary/Wage
As per CUPE Collective Agreement Program Instructor III $21.33/hour.
