POSITION OVERVIEW:

This is front-line, hands-on recreation work performed in support of Children’s programs. An incumbent supports senior staff with the leadership and instruction of programs, camps and indoor/outdoor activities for children. The work is performed under close supervision and according to specific instructions. The incumbent is expected to exercise tact and diplomacy in public contact, but difficult and unusual situations are referred to a superior who reviews work for effectiveness and compliance with policies and procedures.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work, plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Some knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and instruction for children.
  • Some knowledge of the rules, regulations, procedures and policies governing the work.
  • Ability to assist in providing leadership and instruction for special events, programs, camps and playground activities.
  • Ability to deal effectively with program participants.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment used in the work.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATES:

  • Standard First Aid and CPR – Level C

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a recreation environment
  • Coaching various sports
  • Trained or certified with NCCP courses
  • Support working at events, activities, and out trips
  • High Five Training
  • Fundamental Movement Skills Training

HOURS OF WORK:

Hours of work are governed by Schedule B (C, J) of the Collective Agreement alongside the Letter of Understanding for Workers in Children's/Youth Services and Recreation Access.

This is an Auxiliary position with no ongoing schedule of hours.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The work will be performed in a variety of different parks, facilities and open spaces in the community of Maple Ridge.   Applicants should be available to work day, evening and weekend hours. 

The successful candidate will be required to complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment (note – not required a part of the application process; however, will be required upon consideration for employment).
