The City of Grande Prairie is looking for an Indigenous Relations Advisor to join its dynamic team. Reporting to the Community Social Development (CSD) Manager, the Indigenous Relations Advisor will focus on providing leadership, cultural expertise, consultation, and guidance to advance the City of Grande Prairie's commitment towards the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action.
This position will lead the development and implementation of a Reconciliation Framework and Action Plan for the City of Grande Prairie. You will be responsible for building productive relationships with Indigenous communities, leaders, and organizations that will promote reconciliation and strategic partnerships.
This position will also play a key role in ensuring that there is an Indigenous lens/perspective to the work of the City of Grande Prairie. You are a results driven individual that is committed to leading the pathway to reconciliation for the City of Grande Prairie.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a Reconciliation Framework and Action Plan; support departments and service areas with implementation
- Liaison between the City of Grande Prairie and Indigenous communities and organizations to increase mutual understanding and collaboration
- Identify opportunities for City leadership to broaden and deepen relationships and networks with Indigenous leaders, organizations, and communities to enhance relationships, programs, and services
- Advise and lead the development of appropriate Corporate strategies and processes, including providing support to various departments and units to facilitate implementation of the Calls to Action and Indigenous relations
- Oversee the development and implementation of Indigenous training and cultural teachings for city staff, leadership and Council, and track and report to internal and external stakeholders on the City of Grande Prairie Indigenous-related initiatives and Reconciliation Framework
- Stay abreast of trends, emerging issues, and grant opportunities to further advance initiatives
- Research and apply best practices and innovative approaches to address Indigenous issues
- Participate/lead internal and external committees to enhance diversity initiatives
- Affirm the City's commitment to Canadian Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities (CIM) Provide Education and inform internal and external stakeholders.
Hours
35-hours per week.
You Bring
- A minimum of five years of experience working with or in Indigenous communities. The successful person must be of Indigenous Ancestry
- Post secondary degree from a recognized institution in Native Studies, Humanities, Education, Business, Sociology, or Indigenous Relations
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Experience working in a public sector environment considered an asset
- A thorough understanding and experience working with Indigenous cultures, traditions, ceremonies and practices
- Well developed network of Indigenous community and Elders is an asset
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and development
- Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
- Proven ability to build productive relationships and rapport with internal and external partners, community leaders, and businesses
- Strong knowledge of the social, cultural, and economic impacts of residential schools is a must; must be well versed in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action
- Demonstrated experience in program development and facilitation of culturally appropriate training related to Indigenous Peoples Indigenous Studies, Community Development, Education, Indigenous Law or equivalent.
- Experience in report writing
- Strong understanding of community resources, agencies, and systems is an asset.
- Proven leadership skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to speak Cree is an asset
- Demonstrated skills in collaboration, conflict management and negotiation
- Understanding of the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion work
