The City of Delta is proud to be the recipient of $14.2 million in federal funding through the Housing Accelerator Fund, making Delta the first community announced in this second round of funding. 

This significant investment, provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, will support several new City initiatives designed to address the housing crisis by making it easier to build more homes, faster. Included in these initiatives will be the establishment of a building permit fee incentive program which, when implemented, will help to encourage efficient construction, particularly of purpose-built rental, affordable housing, missing middle, and other in-demand housing types.

"We know that a lack of housing options and supply is one of the most pressing challenges facing our City," said Mayor George V. Harvie. "This grant, through the Housing Accelerator Fund, will serve as critical support towards addressing the impacts of the housing crisis and build housing to meet the needs of our community. On behalf of Delta Council, I want to extend our sincere gratitude to the Government of Canada for their investment in this essential work."

In addition to the building permit fee incentive program, funding from the Housing Accelerator Fund will support further measures to encourage construction, including the expanded use of technology to streamline the development process, reducing parking requirements, and establishing strategic partnerships to facilitate non-market housing. 

The new initiatives supported by federal funding will build upon the ongoing work to support housing development in Delta, as part of the City's goal to "Build Housing and Grow Sustainably." In 2024, the City took tangible steps to encourage the construction of housing, through projects like adopting a new Official Community Plan, enabling Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing, and innovative events like Delta's first PLAN-A-THON.
