Description
The City of Chilliwack is seeking a highly motivated and dependable individual to fill the position of Fire Chief. The City of Chilliwack operates from six fire stations located strategically throughout the City. Each station has a full complement of modern, up to date vehicles and equipment. There are 29 full time firefighters and 130 paid-on-call volunteer firefighters.

The roles of the Fire Chief are to strategically plan and provide leadership and coordination of all sections within the Chilliwack Fire Department and to ensure Fire Department Operations continue to deliver exceptional customer service in the areas of suppression, prevention, public education, emergency management, medical and rescue services to the citizens of Chilliwack. One of the key roles is to provide professional advice to Council and other City departments in the areas of expertise on all aspects of urban fire protection, disaster planning and emergency response procedures.

The Fire Chief will report to the Chief Administrative Officer and has 3 direct reports: Assistant Chief - Operations and Training; Assistant Chief - Prevention; and Assistant Chief - Emergency Planning and Health and Safety.
 

Requirements

Qualifications include a degree in Fire Science, Management, Public or Business Administration or a related field, supplemented with formal training in fire protection technology, fire command and on-site management are preferred. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 - 15 years of related experience with at least 10 years of progressive responsibility as a Fire Chief or Assistant Chief.

Knowledge and experience in the public sector unionized setting with strong labour relations background is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership, judgment and interpersonal skills and the proven ability to develop effective working relationships with employees, elected officials and external stakeholders. The candidate must have a thorough understanding of Instant Command System (ICS), knowledge of the departmental policies and procedures, bylaws and fire codes relating to fire prevention and a thorough knowledge and background in Disaster Series Management are also required.
