Bring your water distribution and wastewater collection expertise to a role where you will help protect public health, safeguard the environment, and strengthen essential municipal services. As Utility Operator II with the City of Fort Saskatchewan, you will be a skilled operator—maintaining critical infrastructure, responding to operational challenges, and supporting services vital to community well-being.

Reporting to the Foreman, Utilities, you will help operate and maintain systems that reliably provide drinking water, fire protection, and wastewater collection. This technical, hands-on role offers variety in the field—from inspecting hydrants, operating valves, maintaining pump stations, and servicing water meters to completing inspections, locating utilities, and responding to water breaks, sewer back-ups, and frozen services. You will contribute to day-to-day service reliability and regulatory compliance while fostering a positive and safe work environment and earning 900 Direct Responsible Charge hours annually.

Requirements

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair water and sewer infrastructure, and help implement corrective actions to maintain system integrity.
  • Apply sound judgment and self-motivation to carry-out operational activities using efficient and sustainable practices.
  • Conduct testing, sampling, and system checks to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate resources to execute assigned programs such as unidirectional flushing.
  • Complete meter installations and related work to support accurate billing.
  • Respond to utility locates, and customer inquiries, and utility emergencies.

The successful candidate will have two years or more experience operating, maintaining, and repairing municipal water and sewer systems, including demonstrated familiarity with SCADA, water meter systems, and mobile mapping / GIS applications. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build positive relationships are essential. Comfortability using hand-held power tools, heavy-duty equipment, and data entry tools and software is critical. Specific qualifications include:

  • Alberta recognized Level II Operator Certificates for both Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection
  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (a Class 3 Driver’s License is an asset)
  • Current certificates for Confined Space Entry, Ground Disturbance, Fall Protection, and First Aid

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver’s Abstract will be required at the time of interview.
