Temporary (Up to 24 Months) | Full-Time | On-site
Starting at $37.61/hour

As a Senior Accounting Assistant you will play a critical role in supporting the Finance Department by ensuring fiscal accountability and control. This position provides timely and accurate financial information to Directors and Managers, maintains proper records and reporting, and supports financial system operations. The role includes assisting with financial document preparation, account reconciliations, grant administration, budget tracking, and ERP system support.

How you'll own it

  • Perform system-related tasks, including month-end close, year-end close support, and setting up new accounts.
  • Provide support for Unit4 (General Ledger, PCB, and Planner) and assist process analysts with system-related tasks.
  • Maintain ERP accounts, including managing cost centers, projects, work orders, allocations, and fixed assets.
  • Complete corporate-wide grant applications (e.g., CCBF/LGFF), perform reconciliations, archive documentation, and handle government reporting (e.g., SFE/SEPOS).
  • Maintain a forecast of available grants to support funding discussions.
  • Process and track budget amendments in Unit4 using Excelerator, ensuring accurate records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist in compiling tri-annual budget amendment reports for Council.
  • Support the financial analyst during budget season by preparing budget reports and performing administrative tasks.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions, including maintaining the chart of accounts and initiating correcting entries.
  • Perform monthly account analysis, reconciliations, and review journal entries for accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist with year-end working papers, closing entries, and the preparation of financial reports.
  • Conduct internal control audits (e.g., petty cash, departmental cash procedures, Petro-Pass usage).
  • Provide backup support for the bank desk function to mitigate business continuity risks.
  • Assist in the implementation of Unit4 health check recommendations in collaboration with FC&R process analysts.
  • Support process improvement initiatives and special projects as assigned.
  • Train staff on ERP system processes and provide financial guidance on general ledger queries, journal entries, and other accounting matters.
Requirements

What you bring

  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, and PSAB accounting principles with the ability to apply them in a complex computer environment.
  • Strong understanding of transaction and processing controls and financial accounting system data flows.
  • Exceptional arithmetic skills for performing rapid and accurate calculations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptability to integrated ERP systems and new applications.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to listen, understand, and address concerns promptly.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and commitment to fostering a constructive, safety-conscious work culture.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional service to internal customers.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a diploma in Business Administration or equivalent with a major in accounting from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in an accounting environment with exposure to complex tasks.
  • A management-approved equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
