Education: High school graduation. Completion of the NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2 (IFSAC accredited) standard.
Other Required Qualifications: Valid BC driver’s license, Class 3 with air brake endorsement (or proven BC equivalent). A driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Valid First Responder certification or Occupational First Aid Level 3. No summary conviction for a criminal offense related to the job of Firefighter. Must be physically fit and able to successfully pass both the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and the Firefighter Medical Examination (NFPA 1582 standard).
Experience: A proven history of satisfactory job performance.
Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of a minimum of one year post-secondary education (30 credits) or completion of two years of a recognized apprenticeship program. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Current certificates in any of the following specialty areas: Hazardous Materials; High Angle Rescue; Swift Water Rescue; Ice Rescue; Confined Space Entry; Fire Service Instructor. Previous firefighting experience (paid or volunteer). Current aquatics-related life saving certificates. Experience in work related to the interests of Fire Services (for example: building construction, mechanics, first aid, nursing, paramedical, driving trucks or large emergency vehicles, etc.). Fluency in a language other than English.
Knowledge & Skills: Thorough knowledge of, and expertise in, all aspects of fire service operations. Thorough knowledge of emergency medical care. Good knowledge of the maintenance and care of equipment. Working knowledge of building construction, hydraulics, physics and chemistry as applied to firefighting. The ability to react quickly and remain calm for prolonged periods under arduous and adverse conditions. Demonstrated commitment to a healthy lifestyle and fitness. Ability to appropriately use professional judgement in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times. The ability to work within, and actively contribute to, a team environment. Demonstrated contribution to supporting an inclusive, accepting workplace. Demonstrated ability to promote and support a harassment-free workplace. The ability to proactively embrace changes in the workplace. Strong customer service orientation. Demonstrated ability to proficiently use MS Office programs and other Fire Department software. Knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations, occupational hazards and safe work procedures as it relates to the position including, but no limited to: bullying and harassment, working alone and other significant hazards.
Starting monthly wage of $6,848 plus a comprehensive benefit and pension package.
