Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one (1) permanent position of Trip Reservationist / Dispatcher with Halifax Transit.

Under the direction of the Call Centre Supervisor, Accessible Transit, this position will be responsible for both the duties and responsibilities of a Dispatcher and Trip Reservationist.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dispatch Duties:

  • Processing and communicating customer pick-up and drop off information and instructions to co-ordinate the activities of Bus Operators. (Trapeze Pass, Mobile Date Terminal MDT, Two Way Radio, direct phone line communication).
  • Ensure that all Dispatch duties are performed in accordance with Collective Agreement and standard Transit Operational Procedures and Policies.
  • Communicating with Bus Operators regarding service information, such as cancellations, traffic conditions, schedule adjustments, passenger no shows, emergencies and other relevant information.
  • Dispatching Bus Operators according to the written schedules or as situations require.
  • Maintaining master run sheets to ensure accuracy of run times, cancellations, no shows and other related information. Enter information into Trapeze software as required.
  • Monitoring Bus Operator schedules and locations.
  • Prepare and maintain daily spare-board list and worksheet.
  • Maintain and file reports in data base and via emails to Supervisor/Manager for day-to-day Operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Trip Reservationist:

  • Interacts with AAB clients via phone and provides accurate information in a clear, courteous and professional manner.
  • Listens, questions and determines client’s needs and requirements and confirms the status of reservations, trip bookings, cancellations, pick-up and drop off times and locations.
  • Communicates all same day service cancellations to AAB Dispatcher immediately utilizing Trapeze Messaging System for their records.
  • Provides information to customers regarding AAB eligibility information, availability of AAB service, AAB service standards, applicable fares and general service inquiries.
  • Maintains AAB Database by entering corresponding information with emphasis on accuracy.
  • Keeps all office equipment operational by following established procedures.
  • Maintains and files reports in a data base and via emails to Supervisor/Manager for day-to-day Operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time.

HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Sunday (40 hours per week) Shift work - shift changes on short notice in response to operational requirements.

WORK LOCATION: Burnside Transit Centre, 200 Ilsley Ave, Dartmouth, NS; B3B 1V1.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with training or experience in general office procedures.
  • Good knowledge of computers with working knowledge in Networks, Windows NT, Windows 7, Micro soft Word, Excel, Trapeze, Microsoft access and Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and experience in dealing with public enquiries, knowledge of radio and telephone equipment and use.
  • Good knowledge of the Metro area, Street Names and major landmarks including health, rehabilitation, nursing and special care facilities.
  • Knowledge of physical and mental disabilities and their effect on personal mobility.
  • Working knowledge of wheelchairs and other personal mobility devices.
  • Current First Aid and CPR training.

Technical /Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Access-A-Bus and Accessible Low floor Transit system, fare structure and operational policies and procedures.
  • Good knowledge of workplace safety practices and in particular to the transportation of mobility devices.
  • Knowledge of radio communication procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of the HRM service area.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

Salary & Benefits

SALARY: The starting salary for this position is $51,194 ($24.61 per hour) per annum as per the ATU Collective Agreement.
