At the City of Medicine Hat, environmental leadership is about public safety, responsible growth, and long-term community stewardship. As our Environmental Specialist, you'll help shape how environmental responsibility is applied across the City. You'll bring your expertise to complex regulatory matters, support diverse operations, and make a visible, meaningful impact through a truly city‑wide role.

We're a team that believes how we work is just as important as the work we do. Grounded in our values - Own It, Team Up, Be Curious, and Service with Care - we're committed to delivering meaningful impact for our community while supporting each other along the way.

How you'll own it

As the City's environmental subject matter expert, you'll provide trusted guidance across departments-supporting regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and public safety.

You will:

  • Act as the primary environmental advisor to City departments and projects.
  • Interpret environmental data, assess risk, and recommend practical, defensible solutions.
  • Advise on environmental incidents and support emergency response as required.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with internal teams, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to continuous improvement in all environmental practices.

A closer look at the role

This role offers broad exposure across environmental disciplines and regulatory environments rarely found in a single position.

You will work with:

  • Provincial and federal environmental legislation affecting municipalities, utilities, generation, and energy-related operations.
  • Environmental permitting, approvals, and regulatory compliance.
  • Environmental auditing and compliance programs.

You will also:

  • Lead and coordinate environmental site assessments (ESAs), contaminated sites management, and remediation activities.
  • Prepare and oversee environmental regulatory reporting, including NPRI, greenhouse gas reporting, and environmental monitoring.
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the City's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSE MS).
  • Track environmental performance metrics and help strengthen environmental stewardship across the organization.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Environmental professional designation in Alberta is an asset.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience.
  • An equivalent combination of management approved education and experience may be considered.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
