The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking an Engineering Summer Student to support our Engineering team during the spring/summer season (May-August). This position provides a great opportunity to gain hands on experience supporting municipal infrastructure projects that help keep our community running! If you are interested in applying your engineering education, gaining experience in field work, site inspections, data collection, and project support, this position is for you!

This term position is based on a 35-hour work week, working Monday to Friday.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing technical analysis, reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Provide project management assistance with capital & operational projects.
  • Support the development of presentations, memos, calculation packages, and specifications.
  • Assist, coordinate & conduct site inspections, quantity calculations, and quality control activities for municipal construction and land development projects.
  • Perform construction surveys and asset verification activities as required
  • Conduct inspections on sidewalks, roadways, and other municipal infrastructure to support asset management programs.
  • Assist with road, drainage, and infrastructure surveys and inspections.
  • Provide support for contract administration and project coordination activities.
  • Utilize software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, GIS applications, and database systems to review, input, analyze, and display engineering data.
  • Attend site visits, prepare inspection reports, review submittals, and provide general project support to the engineering team.
  • Respond to external inquiries from residents, utility companies, engineers, developers, and other stakeholders related to City infrastructure, services, standards, and development procedures
  • Seek solutions to challenges on special projects through research and analysis, and provide recommendations in the form of presentations and reports.
  • Liaise and maintain good public relations with design consultants, developers, contractors, employees, technical support, and members of the public.
  • Research and analyze assigned challenges and provide recommendations to project teams.
  • Support with meeting coordination and stakeholder interactions.

Education, Qualifications and Work Experience

  • Completed at least one year of a post-secondary Engineering or Engineering Technology program (e.g. Civil Engineering Technology, or related field)
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with databases and GIS systems is an asset.
  • Exposure to Autodesk Civil 3D or similar engineering software is considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, including stormwater drainage and survey practices.

This position may be subject to grant funding requirements, which could require the successful candidates to be between the ages of 16 and 30. Funding approval has not yet been confirmed, and applications from all qualified candidates will be considered. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Previous construction related experience is an asset.
  • Ability to operate or learn survey equipment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and self-management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with a professional approach to customer service.
  • Proficiency in Computer Aided Design and Drafting and GIS.
  • Experienced in reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License and acceptable Driver's Abstract.

Physical Effort and Safety Commitment

The employee is responsible for full cooperation with all aspects of the City’s Occupational Health and Safety program, including compliance with all rules and regulations, and for continually practicing safety while performing their duties, and monitor and enforce subordinate compliance with the OH&S program. As a successful applicant you will need to be: 

  • Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions. 
  • Able to work in both office and field environments with uneven terrain, stand for long periods of time on a variety of surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, turf, etc.
  • Able to perform physical duties, including lifting materials up to 50lbs.
  • Able to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
