About the Role

Our Streets department is looking for safety-minded, motivated and hard-working team players who enjoy honest work that provides a solid sense of accomplishment. We are expanding our team and need temporary full-time labourers. Labourers are the starting point where our staff get on the job training which then puts them in a position to compete for other positions such as concrete finishers, rough carpenters, equipment operators, truck drivers or crew supervisors. Many of our full-time staff began work as temporary labourers and it is an excellent opportunity to see if a career in public service is for you.

Labourers join a team and perform manual outside work entailing physical effort in performing unskilled and semi-skilled public works construction and maintenance tasks on the concrete, asphalt or maintenance crews. Work assignments can include a variety of tasks such as operating various hand tools safely, as well as electric, gasoline, hydraulic and pneumatic power tools including compressors, jackhammers, tampers, drills, weed eaters, brush cutters, and chainsaws; acting as a swamper for equipment and trucks; assisting in the construction, repair and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs and gutters, ditches, roads and pavement; and general maintenance activities as required.

The successful applicant must possess:

  • The physical and mental aptitude to work on a crew and learn new skills.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work.
  • The ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled construction and maintenance related tasks.
  • The ability to carry out oral and written instruction and exercise some independent judgement.
  • Skill in the operation of power and hand tools used in the work.
  • Physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of heavy manual work in all types of weather.
