Reporting to the Foreman, Utilities, the Utility Operator II is responsible for supplying safe drinking water while adhering to Alberta Environment Legislation for Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems. The Utility Operator II receives oral and written instructions from the Supervisor who evaluates work performed. Employees in this position are periodically responsible for the task coordination of employees assigned as helpers and are to promote a positive, secure and safe work environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure accurate information for billing (meter reading – new SmartPoint install).
  • Perform all assigned tasks in operation and maintenance of a water distribution system, water reservoirs and pump stations, bulk water station, water meters, sanitary sewer collection system in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Emergency response (water breaks, sewer back-ups, frozen sewer and water services).
  • Fire protection (rebuild and inspect hydrants, unidirectional flushing, snow removal and winterization).
  • On call for all City emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rotating schedule.
  • Alberta First Call utility locates on behalf of the City.
  • Perform daily inspection/lubrication/minor maintenance of utilized vehicles and equipment; report deficiencies.
Requirements

Candidates must have a grade 12 education (or equivalent) and an Alberta Level II Certificate in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection. Heavy Equipment Operations Training is considered an asset. A minimum of 2 years’ experience operating, maintaining, and repairing Municipal water and sewer systems is required. The successful candidate must have a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License. A valid Class 3 Alberta Driver’s License, as well as hydrant and valve certification, are considered assets. The incumbent must be capable of maintaining and repairing all Municipal water and sewer infrastructure in a safe and effective manner, and possess Emergency First Aid, TDG, WHMIS, Confined Space Entry, and Open Excavation and Shoring certifications. This position requires working knowledge and experience of powered and hand operated tools, fabrication, and carpentry skills with capabilities of operating heavy equipment related to work. Experience working with SCADA systems (e.g., VTScada), MuniSight and Field Maps (GIS programs), radio meter reading programs, along with basic computer skills are essential. Excellent customer service skills are needed to build positive relationships with the public.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver’s Abstract will be required at the time of interview.

Hours of Work:            80 hours biweekly

Rate of Pay:                $35.18 - $38.65 per hour
