This posting is for two positions: Outdoor Instructor I and Outdoor Instructor II

We are seeking up to 7 Outdoor Instructors.

We are hiring passionate team members for Outdoor Instructor I and Outdoor Instructor II positions based at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre, where our team creates meaningful outdoor experiences for schools, children and community groups. Activities may include environmental programs, canoeing, fire and shelter programs, orienteering, day camp programming, winter programs such as xc skiing, snowshoeing, and more! 

The Outdoor Instructor I position is a great entry level role for anyone beginning a career in recreation or environmental education. In this position, you’ll deliver engaging outdoor programs and camps while building skills in leadership, instruction, and working with diverse groups. You’ll take part in training that grows your knowledge, develops your outdoor abilities, and helps contribute to a safe and positive experience for all participants. 

The Outdoor Instructor II position is a leadership role responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering high quality outdoor recreation and environmental education programs, camps and events. This role includes mentoring staff, supporting program design, as well as ensuring a safe environment for participants.  

Key Responsibilities:

Instructor I ($20.55 - $25.72)

  • Support the Instructor II (Lead) with the planning and delivery of outdoor programs, camps, and events to the general public, schools, and community groups
  • Support and assist the Lead Instructor with managing forms, documents, and communications to parents/guardians
  • Adapt your teaching style and model positive behaviour to help participants and teammates learn in a supportive, fun environment
  • Manage group dynamics and behaviours, including resolving conflicts between program participants
  • Greet and welcome each program participant, ensuring the guest experience is treated with respect and value
  • Respond to incidents, including those that require first aid, and communicate to supervisors.

     

Instructor II - Lead Instructor ($27.01 - $33.78)

  • Work as a team leader to ensure the creative and effective planning and delivery of all outdoor programs, camps and events  
  • Manage all forms, documents and communications to parents/guardians and leaders of school and community group programs, camps, event participants  
  • Ensure pertinent information, issues, or concerns are communicated to staff team, the Assistant Recreation Programmer and/or the Recreation Programmer 
  • Help create a safe environment by doing regular checks of program areas and following all safety and OHS guidelines.
  • Make sure program areas and equipment are ready to use by doing basic cleaning, tracking supplies, and helping with set‑up and clean‑up
  • Manage group dynamics and behaviours, including resolving conflicts between program participants
  • Greet and welcome each program participant, ensuring the guest experience is treated with respect and value
  • Respond to incidents, including those that require first aid, and communicate to supervisors.
Requirements

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working with youth, in a recreational/outdoor field
    • *Minimum 2 years of experience in outdoor skills, adventure education, and/or environmental education program planning and delivery *for Outdoor Instructor II position
  • Positive and professional attitude with strong leadership and communication skills  
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and adapt to changing environments
  • Understanding of environmental stewardship and physical literacy, along with the enthusiasm and initiative to apply them in program facilitation.
  • Plan and adapt programs, events, and camps to accommodate a wide range of participant needs, ensuring activities are engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate
  • In the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Tourism, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Current and Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR ‘C’ (also called Standard First Aid)
  • Maintain program area technical qualification/certifications specific to the seasonal programs delivered. These may include:
    • First Aid Certifications and CPR Level ‘C’
    • Paddle Canada instructor certifications and memberships
    • Cross Country Ski certifications and memberships
    • Other coaching certifications as required
  • The following certifications are an asset to the position:
    • Wilderness First Aid (20/40/80hr)
    • Paddle Canada Certifications (Lake Instructor, Waterfront Instructor, Big Boat Skills)
    • CANSI and/or NCCP Cross Country Skiing certificates
    • Outdoor Council of Canada Leadership Courses  
    • High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development
    • WHMIS

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
Salary & Benefits

Pay Range: $20.55 - $33.78
