Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Mechanic I and or designate, the Shop Mechanic is responsible for performing mechanical repair and maintenance of the MD Fleet (vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment). The employee would ideally have a Class 3 License and be able to operate heavy equipment or trucks if required.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Assisting the supervisor with the planning and organizing of the functions and activities related to the servicing, maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and equipment in order to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable and safe.
  • Determine the nature and extent of repairs and maintenance needed and complete in-house or schedule with off-site vendors
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, dismantle, align, assemble and adjust mechanical equipment and machinery to maintain it in efficient operating condition
  • Install new and added-on equipment and modifications on equipment and vehicles
  • Test repaired equipment for proper operation
  • Advise supervisor of any serious mechanical or safety issues
  • Monitor parts usage and report on any materials issues or purchasing requirements
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding, flame-cutting, brazing and soldering equipment
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance records and documentation
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the shop and ensure shop policies are adhered to
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
  • Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to OH&S and MD safety procedures and program
  • Perform in a team environment
  • When required, operate heavy equipment and trucks
  • Perform other duties as required

  • Promotes a positive, professional image of the MD and provides consistent, knowledgeable customer service to all clients
  • Seeks to understand individual client needs and concerns and assists them to find the most appropriate solution or information
  • Respond in a professional and timely manner to inquiries, complaints, or suggestions from clients, providing effective follow-up as required
  • Diffuses upset, anxious and/or angry clients and defers issues to the appropriate person for resolution if needed
  • Exercises discretion, diplomacy, and judgement in handling sensitive information
Requirements

Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma – Required
  • Certified Mechanic License – Required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License – Required
  • Alberta Class 1 or 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement – Preferred

 

 

Abilities and Experience

  • Proven mechanical abilities in gas and diesel automotive repairs and heavy equipment repairs – Required
  • Must be physically fit and able to do heavy lifting work – Required 
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office programs, with the ability to independently create and edit a variety of documents and spreadsheets – Required
  • Experience with GIS systems – Asset
  • Experience with Digital work order systems like Asset Management - Required
  • Excellent social, communication, and relationship management skills – Required
  • Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team – Required
  • Must be organized and pay strong attention to detail – Required
  • Able to always deal with people tactfully and professionally – Required
Salary & Benefits

Salary starting at $40.20 - $52.91 per hour dependant on experience and education.
