Position Summary:
Reporting to the Roads & Drainage Supervisor, Roads and Drainage Operators staff operate and maintain vehicles and equipment necessary in carrying out the various operations and maintenance works of the Roads and Drainage functions with the Operations department.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain designated vehicles and equipment.
- Perform work processes required consistent with the construction operation and maintenance programs and projects of the Roads functions including snow removal, ice blading, tree removal, cold patch applications, grass cutting, transporting materials, road grading, road sanding/salting, etc.
- Perform work processes required consistent with the construction, operation and maintenance of drainage functions including ditches, swales, water courses, culverts, structures, storm water management facilities.
- Participate in rotation of “on-call emergency pager” as established by the Supervisor of Roads and Drainage and be available to immediately respond to after hours and weekend calls.
- Assist other departments and Operations divisions as directed by the Manager of Roads and Drainage by providing equipment operation and /or manual labour.
- Undertake work activities consistent with the policies and procedures of the Roads and Drainage Division.
- Promotes a high standard of customer service to the public as well as to all internal customers.
- Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Performs other duties as required.
What you will need:
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with similar equipment in road and drainage construction, operation and maintenance.
- Class DZ driver’s license.
- Competency in operating the following equipment: snow plow, backhoe, loader. Experience with a grader or sidewalk machine is considered an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance.
- Demonstrated organizational skills with strong oral and written communication abilities.
- Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
- High level of personal integrity.
- Strong work ethic.
- Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability for morning, evening, and weekend shifts.
- Confident, consistent decisive personality.
- Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
