Are you a strong communicator who enjoys solving problems and helping people? The City of Medicine Hat is seeking a Municipal Works Technologist II to provide technical and customer service support to the Municipal Works Engineering team, focusing on infrastructure assessment and analysis related to transportation and drainage systems. In this role, you'll be on the front line of public service by responding to and investigating transportation-related concerns, collecting and analyzing data, and ensuring our roadways and infrastructure operate safely and efficiently. You'll collaborate with multiple teams across the organization to deliver practical solutions and positive experiences for our residents.

Your key responsibilities

  • Respond to and coordinate public inquiries related to traffic, crosswalks, and roadway concerns, ensuring clear and timely communication with residents.
  • Collect, analyze, and track data related to traffic and transportation issues to identify trends and support decision-making.
  • Provide technical support for roadway and drainage infrastructure, including inspections, minor design updates, and field data collection.
  • Maintain and update GIS data, drawings, and maps to support operations, analysis, and asset management.
  • Conduct field inspections related to Construction Completion Certificates (CCC) and Final Acceptance Certificates (FAC).
  • Collaborate with internal partners in engineering, operations, and other departments to address concerns and coordinate responses.
  • Prepare documentation, reports, and drawings in accordance with established procedures, standards, and regulations.
  • Support process improvements by helping maintain technical records, templates, and data systems.
  • Provide guidance and technical assistance to Technologist I and temporary staff as needed.

What you bring

  • Knowledge of civil engineering, drafting, and surveying principles, particularly related to transportation and stormwater systems.
  • Proven customer service mindset. You take pride in providing clear, timely, and helpful responses to public inquiries and concerns.
  • Solid understanding of civil engineering, drafting, and surveying principles, particularly related to transportation and stormwater systems.
  • Knowledge of traffic analysis methods and applicable standards (TAC, Alberta Transportation, etc.) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collect, interpret, and report on technical data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS, AutoCAD, and other relevant engineering or asset management software, with a willingness to learn new tools and systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A collaborative, adaptable, and growth-oriented approach, with the ability to build positive working relationships across teams.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and understanding of occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Requirements

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Civil or Municipal Engineering Technology Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of practical work experience in an engineering technology environment.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership with the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (C.E.T.) and/or the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET).
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • A management-approved equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre-employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
