The Transportation and Development Services Division is dedicated to advancing active transportation and transportation asset management within the municipal rights-of-way. Joining our team as an Engineering Technician IV under the direction of the section supervisor or managers, you will support sustainable transportation initiatives. You will manage impactful municipal infrastructure projects from inception to completion, using your insights into broad-scale project execution and community impact. Your technical expertise will be crucial in:
- Project Management: Manage all aspects of complex municipal infrastructure projects such as intersection reconstruction and complete streets. Create project charters, develop concept and detailed designs, coordinate with stakeholders, conduct quantity takeoffs, prepare estimates, oversee construction, and complete project closeout using the District’s Project Management Office Framework.
- Active Transportation Design: Engage in the innovative design of active transportation networks that promote sustainable modes such as walking, cycling, and public transit. Using and refining your existing skills, use Autodesk Civil 3D to develop solutions that align with contemporary road and active transportation design guidelines.
- Peer Mentorship: Share your advanced technical skills with junior staff, helping build our team from the ground up.
- Technical Review: Review and provide critical analysis of design proposals and constructed works, ensuring adherence to municipal specifications and design guidelines.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as a point of contact for public inquiries, conveying technical information related to active transportation in clear and accessible language.
- Asset Management: Assist in the strategic planning and management of municipal-owned and third-party transportation infrastructure by evaluating asset conditions, participating in asset renewal and modernization, and supporting integrated infrastructure strategies.
Technical expertise required includes proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D and Bluebeam Revu for design and review tasks, a firm grasph of TAC Design Guidelines, MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), BC Active Transportation Design Guidelines, CSA B651: Accessible Design for the Built Environment, and familiarity with NACTO and AASHTO publications. Knowledge of the Project Management Body of Knowledge and a relevant PMI certification would be assets.
Requirements include a two-year diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution and a minimum of five years of directly related experience or a degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience; eligibility for registration as an AScT with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC or as an EIT with Engineers and Geoscientists BC; and a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License. Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D is essential and must be demonstrated in the cover letter or resume. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week), with variation of work hours, flex days, and 2-3 days per week work from home available.
