Description
The District of Saanich’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking a team player to help drive our mission of Healthy People, Healthy Places and Healthy Community, while supporting our vision: a Saanich where everyone belongs.

You’ll work within a team where service excellence, learning and knowledge sharing, and feedback and accountability are highly valued, and where communication, trust, respect, and positivity form the foundation for everything we do.

The Recreation Division at Gordon Head Recreation Centre is looking for energetic and responsible Aquatic Instructor II / Lifeguard to join our aquatics team. In this dual role, you will contribute to a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment by providing high-quality swim instruction and vigilant lifeguarding. Instructors are responsible for teaching the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. Lifeguards ensure public safety by enforcing pool rules, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a positive atmosphere on the pool deck and in the water.

The Aquatic Instructor II / Lifeguard will be responsible for the supervision of patrons during public swims and the delivery of swimming lessons to a wide range of age groups and abilities. Duties include lesson planning, completing progress reports, enforcing pool rules, responding to incidents, and inspecting equipment and facilities to ensure safety standards are met. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the public.

Requirements

Requirements include completion of Grade 10, a minimum age of 16 years, and at least 3 months of relevant experience. Candidates must hold current certifications in: Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, National Lifeguard (Pool Option), Standard First Aid with CPR-C, and WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid (or higher/equivalent, as required). Previous teaching or lifeguarding experience is considered an asset. Employment is conditional upon provision of a satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS), and renewal as per policy. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Assigned shifts will include both teaching lessons and lifeguarding. Schedules are assigned seasonally by a supervisor and may change based on operational needs. The position requires a minimum commitment of 14 hours per week, with a target of 20 hours per week where operationally feasible.
