The District of North Vancouver is looking for an adaptable, self-motivated, customer-service oriented individual for a regular full-time position as a Building Inspector 1.  Your primary area of responsibility will be Inspection of residential, industrial and commercial projects during construction, alteration and repair to determine conformity with established bylaws, acts, codes, standards and regulations. You will also discuss construction, alteration and repair matters with contractors, engineers, architects, homeowners and the public; interpret requirements; advise on required changes and/or corrections; and determine compliance.

Depending on workload you may also be required to undertake the examination and checking of plans and permit applications for compliance to building and zoning bylaws and related regulations; and processing building permit issuances and rejections.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Thorough knowledge of building construction practices and methods
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant by-laws, acts, codes, standards and regulations
  • The ability to read and interpret plans and related material to recognize technical requirements and suggest changes
  • The ability to establish and build positive relationships with local and broader construction industry stakeholders
  • The ability to process applications through a variety of municipal departments
  • The ability to deal effectively and tactfully with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • The ability to prepare reports, records and correspondence related to the work and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision 
Requirements

Qualifications

You have completed Grade 12 plus an apprenticeship in the carpentry trade or graduation from a post-secondary institution with a diploma in Building Technology and you have sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. You must be a BOABC member in good standing and have achieved a BOABC Level 3 qualification or possess an exempt professional designation. A valid B.C. Driver’s Licence is required. Use of a personal vehicle for District business may also be required although you will primarily be using a corporate vehicle.

 

Salary & Benefits

Details

Salary: The pay range for this unionized position is $50.13 to $54.44 per hour (2024 rates)

Hours of Work: 35-hour work week
