Description
The Town of Banff is seeking a skilled and motivated Automation and Controls Technologist to lead programming, control system management, and system optimization across the Town’s water and wastewater infrastructure. You’ll work with SCADA, PLCs, telemetry, HMIs, and related automation systems to support the operation, maintenance, and capital integration of water and wastewater systems. This role is essential for ensuring real-time, reliable system performance and environmental compliance in support of Banff’s operational goals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Programming and maintaining SCADA, PLC, and HMI systems
  • Troubleshooting and emergency response for control system failures
  • Designing, repairing, and calibrating telemetry and instrumentation
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external contractors on Capital Projects
  • Managing backups, change logs, and control system documentation
  • Supporting cybersecurity, performance optimization, and regulatory compliance
  • Participating in after-hours system support when required
Requirements

The ideal candidate holds post-secondary education in automation, instrumentation, or industrial controls and five years or more of experience with SCADA, PLCs, and automated systems. They have familiarity with platforms like Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Ignition, or Wonderware and a strong problem-solving mindset and collaborative approach. Water/wastewater certifications and First Aid/CPR certifications (or willingness to obtain) are considered assets. A valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract is required upon hire.
